?? Threatening E-Mail from "eBay Global Collections" - Confirmed it is from eBay!

Has anyone else received this type of communication?

Today I received a threat from eBay. Perhaps they might call it a promise.

They have threatened to send my information to a debt collector for an item that I listed ONLY 2 DAYS AGO with no prior balance.

THE E-MAIL I RECEIVED FROM eBay:

ebaythreat1.png

A SECOND MESSAGE WAS ALSO SENT TO eBay 'Messages' ..ebaythreat2.pngTHIS IS THE AUTO-REPLY E-MAIL I RECEIVED AFTER REPORTING THE INITIAL E-MAIL AS A 'SPOOF' OR HARMFUL ATTEMPT, BUT I LATER DETERMINED WAS ACTUALLY FROM EBAY.ebayabuse.png

A couple of points:

1. My payment due date is 29 days away since I just listed my item.

2. I had a neutral balance of $0.00 before listing this single item just 2 days ago!

There are still 28 days remaining on my listing yet they're threatening me with "eBay Global Collections".

Is this now the common theme among companies largely funded by private equity?

An internet search suggests eBay has more than 160 subsidiaries, a trademark of a ponzi scheme but what do I know, I am just a dumb customer.

This type of behavior and communication with consumers is absolutely mistrustful, twisted and totally inappropriate. It is not a mistake when it continues to happen, I think many people are stuck in an abusive relationship with an entity that we call eBay.

The actions taken by eBay themselves calls into question the integrity of the company, the people who make up the company, and what their actions and words are really communicating to American citizens, paying customers, who pay to use their services.

Upon further search, it seems eBay has a pattern of doing this as a matter of routine.

There are many, many web results. I actually forward the E-Mail to eBay before seeing a message in the 'Messages' area of my account also.

Many people seem confused when it happens, and are unsure if it was actually from eBay, but this is absolutely no glitch or mistake. There is an unmistakable pattern of abuse here.

Who are the head corporate people in charge at eBay, are they aware of these methods and do they need to be personally contacted by writing?

If they are aware and this is the best they can do, there are about twenty different ways that I can inform people about this if for some reason this message gets deleted or censored.

Perhaps issues like this need to be discussed with people who have large audiences on YouTube, to gain a better understanding and a consensus about what people think about this.
I have had enough of troglodyte behavior, it seems their treatment of customers has gotten worse.

This is wholly unprofessional and companies must expect an equal or opposite reaction among consumers at a minimum.

I have attached three screenshots.

1. Showing the E-Mail I received. At first, I was unsure if it was legitimate or not, but the links check out and go to the eBay login system.

2. They sent the same correspondence via eBay messages. This also confirms it is business as usual for eBay.

3. The auto-reply from eBay suggests "Most likely, the message you received was not sent to you by eBay."

But, it in fact was and they also sent a similar one to my eBay message folder.

eBay did not contact me, not even once, before sending this threatening letter for a two-day-old 'debt' as they call it. A two-day-old debt they're already threatening to leverage 'eBay Global Collections' to collect.

Who are these people, isn't that an offensive.. brash.. disrespectful.. unprofessional.. totally despicable way to operate a multi-Billion dollar enterprise?

They are so demanding of payment before it is even due, they will threaten you!

Well, that is not acceptable and there are consequences for every action, good or bad. They'll be wholly owned by private equity soon, that is if someone in Congress doesn't take a closer look.

Perhaps the shift away from American sellers and allowing unfair practices by international sellers from Asia is also indicative of eBay's moral compass or the lack thereof.

eBay moderators, modying or censoring this will constitute abuse, modifying or tampering with my account will be documented and sent up the chain to people in Corporate supervisory and executive roles. I will contact each of them personally.  Not to mention media influencers to disseminate this information and other complaints of questionable practicess if suppressed or hidden from view, or if I am punished for bringing this to light.

Absolutely shameful conduct, eBay should not behave like organized crime enforcers while communicating with customers. Over $49 from two days ago, new limits of cringe.

In eBay's very own policy it states: "Payouts are simple and streamlined. eBay deducts selling costs and fees related to your sales from your funds prior to payout." This company should change its name to CringeBay. It appears eBay Global Collections is actually a debt collection agency, the enforcement wing!

This is facist behavioral pattern and not one that any self-respecting business owner would ever emulate!

@freedom-4000,

Your screenshot shows that the insertion fee for the bike was $49.00 even, but also shows that your balance due is $49.30. So it looks like you must have had a balance on your account of 30 cents, before posting your current listing.

Looking through cached pages, I can see that you have listed a number of vehicles for sale in 2023, and also a Holley carburetor (a non-vehicle listing) in late December/early January. There could have been other listings as well.

The most likely explanation I can think of for having a fee due of only 30 cents, is that you had to cancel a regular/non-vehicle sale for damage/out-of-stock, in which case the %age final value fee is refunded, but not the per-order-fixed-amount fee which would have been 30 cents.

IIRC, eBay doesn't normally take any action for a balance due if it is less than a dollar, but it is still a balance due none-the-less. It doesn't make sense to send a threatening letter in this situation, but this is a logical explanation, and the letter looks like a standard form letter.

That's what I said @lacemaker3 about the thirty cents and a cancelled sale, and it appears the seller confirmed above the $0.30 was from a cancelled sale, but swears their balance was zero before listing the bike. They said the $0.30 didn't pop up until after listing the bike. 🤷

Re: ?? Threatening E-Mail from eBay Global Collections - Confirmed it is from eBay!

Never doubted what you said the messages just looked suspicious in nature. EBay should put more effort into dealing with the scam buyers than focusing on honest sellers.

I have little choice but to link an account it's the only way eBay can get me the money for the items I sell. However, I do have a separate checking account and I keep the balance in that very low.

I don't use promoted listings and I buy my shipping labels off eBay for about the same discounted rate as eBay has so my eBay fees are never over 15% of my sales.

Sellers come and go all the time as do buyers. EBay no longer holds the quasi monopoly they once had and other venues are starting to eat into eBay's market share but that is the nature of business and competition.

Thank you. Yes, I understand where you are coming from, but those items cost money and fees are deducted from the gross, not from the net profit.

If you pay $40 for an item and resell it for $80 (to "double" your money) they take 15% of gross.

You've given up 30% of what you actually earned before other fees and taxes.

There's a $15 shipping fee, paid by the buyer, it cost $15 to ship. Their "cut" includes a portion of the money you will be using for shipping, even though you don't wish to make any money from what your customer pays for actual shipping.

You have profited $25.35 on that $80 item that you paid $40 for, that's before thinking about and counting all of your expenses.

What you get back is your initial 'investment' plus a modest profit, the $40 was your money to begin with and obviously cannot be counted as profit. Don't double tax yourself either by forgetting you already paid fees and taxes on that money used for procurement, that is why costs can be written off.

Then you have to pay tax on the actual profit, pay for fuel, boxes, tape, and packing supplies.

Setting out to double your money on a $40 item, how much did that $80 sale net you?

About $16 on an $80 item after all is said and done. Then calculate your time.

Fewer than 1% of eBay sellers are able to build wealth, it will allow you to have food to eat, while eBay rakes in a cool 2.6 Billion per year.

So, how much is that 15% really?

In this example, the profit margin was 20%. If that were a passive investment that would be outstanding, but once you factor your time, if that took you three hours total, between finding it in the resale shop to listing, to packing, to driving and shipping, that is $5.33/hr.

I've met people who sell lots on eBay, but they often don't subtract costs and would rather not think about how much time and resources they actually put into it.

I don't believe eBay is very concerned about improving profits for those who use their services.

They're making Billions on the backs of struggling Americans and the Chinese who sell many products they manufacture themselves.
People fool themselves just by getting their own money back into their hands with a very small profit on top.

There are always those lucky finds that will make some money, but those are infrequent and I wish there were a better way for people to profit more from their own hard work. I respect those who try to forge their own path to, for what most people, is to escape indentured servitude.

To address your final point, only about 1 in 4 active sellers on eBay lives in the United States and they outperform all other platforms combined. Americans are motivated to find ways to survive where there is a deficit of jobs.

eBay on the other hand, is fixated on a global market, driven by UN ESG globalization (The goal is to make Americans poorer) and to increase corporate/shareholder profits for powerful private equity groups who own eBay like Vanguard and BlackRock.

There is little regard for sellers doing the hard work every day to better themselves and their families.

15% of your gross.. of everything, including your shipping and packaging supply costs, what a deal.

It's simply my opinion, fees have escalated and costs across the board have become prohibitive for people to make progress in this type of environment. I would call it an eco-system, but it is not.

That's alright @lacemaker3 . Apparently what I said doesn't count because I'm using a zero feedback posting ID instead of my selling account. 😉

As for the .30 cents, funny you say that, they just added on a bogus .30 cent charge from a previous transaction in Feb.

Yet my balance was $0.00 before submitting ONE listing for $49.

No need to apologize.😆

You didn't threaten collection for a $49 amount two days after it was incurred.

Yes.. you count.. but why not use your seller account?

Do you fear CringeBay?

Nope. Not afraid of eBay. There are angry posters that retaliate against our selling accounts when they don't like our advice. Posting ID protects our selling accounts. Some use buying IDs to post as another option.

To this ^ point, if the 30 cents was due, and eBay wasn't taking action since it was under a buck, incurring the new fee brought the account over $1 and since the 30 cents was already past due it triggered the collections letter. Who the heck knows if eBay intends the system to work that way (sending the letter immediately), or if the system is meant to wait 30 days before sending. Either way, I believe we pinpointed the cause and the seller said they already paid so at least that part is taken care of.

As for how the seller feels they're being treated by eBay, I typically don't comment much on that stuff. I'm more of a how-to poster and a problem-solver in the small capacity we can help fellow buyers and sellers resolve smaller issues.

I do appreciate your helpful nature and thank you for helping others, sincerely.

However, since you've been in this section 4 or 5 years, I hope it is not a case of Stockholm syndrome. 😄

Nah, I've been known to rail against eBay with the best of 'em. I tend to be very constructive though, so it comes off as frustration, a clear problem, and a proposed solution rather than a straight up rant.

Ebay "Global" Collections.....this makes it sound like it was something owed to the old Ebay Global Shipping? I am not sure why a seller would have any fee for that which was not paid upon sale. If this is not phishing, then it sounds like an email meant for a buyer, not a seller?? Very odd for sure and in 20+ years have never seen nor heard of this email (now I just jinxed myself)....

Welcome to the future. I had a prompt, informative, response when I contacted Ebay thru FB,so unlike the telephone drones. Personally, I think its the best thing that Ebay has ever done for sellers...and buyers. If you are unwilling to even try it, Id say thats your loss. Some people are unable to adapt to any changes.

I, nor anyone else, should be expected to sign up for a third-party service separate from the company we

When was the last time any of you have had good customer service anywhere?

Perhaps a cavalier attitude makes it easier to accept a pile of slop while paying for prime rib.

A company that makes 2.6 Billion dollars per year that is unable or unwilling to provide baseline professional customer support via their own website and by phone is a company that is poorly operated.

It is not myself who is unable to adapt, perhaps you should not be so eager to shapeshift into whatever is popular.  Please should not blame the incompetence of a company on customers who speak candidly about issues that are the responsibility of the company. Such as overcharging sellers millions of dollars, double charging, programatic glitches that have a tendency to benefit the company and never get corrected. With unreliable support channels and long waits, many people just accept any discrepancy and pay extra to save time.

Do they have a habit of billing people less?

Do these glitches benefit users, or them?

You love Facebook, that's wonderful, I'm sure that's very convenient for you but it is NOT a professional channel of communication that should be used for official business. If you operate a Facebook specific group, perhaps, but it's not for a well established company with tremendous resources. Not to mention the security risks and the fact that Facebook is a data collection tool, but you go right ahead.

By the way, being on Facebook does not make a person adaptable or tech-savvy.

Most tech savvy people do not use Facebook.

I think many of you might very well be addicted to eBay the way you pile on users who express 100% legitimate concern.

Has anyone else received a similar type of message from eBay, or experienced a so-called "glitch"?

I do love Facebook, it allows me to do  a facetime call with my daughter in India almost every day free of charge. You are certainly welcome to your opinion, but evidently Ebay and many other websites disagree with you that FB is not a professional channel of communication for their customers.I know many tech savvy people on FB,friends and family,so your statement is not accurate.
