ebay removed one of my listings because the Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) claimed it was counterfeit. This item was purchased at an authorized dealer for this brand. There was no explanation for the claim and no clear information on how to contact the rights owner for an explanation. How does ebay know the VeRO program is not being abused by the rights owner?

Under the VERO program, eBay simply responds to a Notice of Claimed Infringement (NOCI) submitted by a rights owner. They do not evaluate the accuracy of that claim - in fact, the law Congress passed discourages them from doing so.
When eBay takes a listing is taken in response to a NOCI, the message you receive from eBay at the time of the takedown should contain contact information for the person who submitted the notice.
Are you saying the message you received did not include this information? Or are you just saying that information was not clear enough for you?
I am a VERO member, and when I submit a NOCI eBay has clearly given out my contact information, because the affected sellers contact me for an explanation of the NOCI all the time.

Review the notice again......Ebay is required to give contact information of the entity that invoked the claim.
That said.........just for info.........there has been at least one publicized case of name brand purses being bought and then fakes being returned to the authorized dealer who then unknowingly sold them as "real". So buying from an authorized dealer may not be slam dunk proof of authenticity.

In addition to the great info posted by @luckythewinner
Here is the eBay link for Vero info>

They provided a link but when I tried it, I got a warning from my browser that it was not a secure site.

Correction, it was not even a link. They only identified the rights owner. Btw, this is a BIG company so expecting me to search for the correct contact information is absurd.

All of the responses I get to the NOCI's that I file come as eBay messages to the eBay account that filed the NOCI.
Are you saying that eBay did not provide you with the eBay account? That seems very, very odd.

What was the item you had listed and had removed?

They did not. Had to call ebay CS to get the contact info. They could not explain why the contact info. was not in the original notification.

Are you sure it was a VeRO removal?
I'm guessing it may have been an ebay removal. Please copy the message, redacting personal identifying info.

It was a jersey made by a BIG sports brand but I'm afraid to give specifics at this point.

Hmm
First due to LAW VERO is god to eBay. They say eBay acts.
Now as for said info you gave, that it back to the so called location you purchased it from and get your money back on the counterfeit item they sold you.
Now that said, such can be fought, and such needs to be done if you have had problems with this type of take down before.
Oh do not relist it.
To many of such situations and you will not be selling on eBay.
Seems you sell a lot of sport related stuff. You are now on the radar, and may find more removed.
One jersey is not worth the time or money to fight it, but you can if you so desire.

First a disclaimer - I don't know sports jerseys but I got a fake A-Rod jersey from what was supposed to be a US seller but came from China with a misspelled/incomplete team name!
I'm curious about your items and source. Are you sure your source is legit?
I found one of your listings for an LA Lakers jersey. AFAIK, the Lakers are NBA but your jersey says MBA. That's odd and I question it! And it doesn't have the red, white and blue NBA logo on the neck as other licensed items have.
shouldn't "M"BA be NBA?

I don't know if it's legit but it looks and feels like a quality item. That's why it would be NICE if they explained how they could tell it was not legit just by looking at the photos. I find it odd that they appear to be uninterested in educating sellers on this matter.
