This is a seller issue, not a technical issue, not a shipping issue.
We pretty much all know abut the technical issues when printing out shipping labels, how the labels would default to a more expensive shipping method.
Does/how does ebay plan on compensating these sellers? Depending on how widespread and how long this glitch lasted, there could be thousands of sellers who overpaid, some of them without even knowing they overpaid.

You gotta be kiddin' me! Are you certain your post isn't just a little "tongue-in-cheek". eBay compensate sellers for the extra cost of a new "feature? You've been around long enough to know this is not a glitch; it's a "feature" to get items to buyers quicker at seller expense.

Are you serious? I thought it was a glitch. LOL

The longer this goes on, I'm having more difficulty believing it is a glitch, but rather a plan by someone crunching the numbers. It seems to have started with only a portion of sellers but now is expanding--possibly due to some early success. I also noticed the little word "fast" beside the more expensive upgrade--wouldn't that require planning? I don't even offer those additional choices on my listings.
Although annoying, this hasn't caught me yet, but how many sellers have been caught? Enough may not pay any attention when printing, or look for something like this, to make this "enhancement" profitable...and yes, I'm still smarting over never receiving my 25th celebration T-shirt!!!

I noticed this too, I have been having the same issue.......some of these things are really becoming
tiresome.

Actually, I think it is something like throwing the spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.

I think it's intentional to increase profits for both FedEx and eBay, they get 12%. I'd be interested in the bank accounts of those responsible for the new feature...
The eBay person is likey already suffering with ebay stock values dwindling because of stunts like this. I've never shipped FedEx and have no plans to, read too many horror stories on this board.

Serious question to programmers out there---can something like this just happen or would it require some human programming to take place? Tired minds want to know.

It has to be programmed or it is a very careless mistake.
A computer does what it is told to do - even AI has to start with human input.

It could have been an effort to get sellers to ship by a faster class of mail and I suspect many didn't notice the upgrade.
I don't print single labels very often and it only happens when I ship one package rather than use the bulk shipping.
And as for ebay compensating sellers. That was a joke, right? The sellers still are responsible for printing the label and not paying attention does not create an obligation on ebay's part.

I think it likely falls under "streamlined, simplified, enhancing your experience, and working as intended".

eBay is not here to compensate sellers but to make as much money (profit) as they can for their executives and shareholders. eBay look out for their best interest and as a seller you need to do the same.
When I print out shipping labels I double-check the shipping cost and the shipping weight. If the shipping cost is out of proportion to the cost of the item, the item's weight then I unchecked the more expensive shipping option eBay selected and check the option that the buyer selected since they paid for the shipping. Any extra shipping cost above what the buyer was charged and paid for comes out of your pocket, not eBay's.

There is no such thing as a glitch.

It could happen due to programmer error such as an oversight but in computers there is no such thing as truly random, everything happens for a reason. So technically it could happen due to no intentional fault but it still happens due to fault of some kind or another.
Yes, an oversight is still a fault.

I bet it has to do with ebay's new QR codes for ebay labels announcement they just rolled out, even in the picture it has the wrong shipping selected. They won't refund you if you select the wrong shipping and only charge FVF on shipping the buyer paid not how you ship it.
