Tax ID number

Got an email, purportedly from Ebay, saying I need to update my tax ID number. With a link to click. Not clicking any link in an email, I'm surprised Ebay would do that. (I did hover over the links and they look legit).

I went to my account to make sure the info is up to date, I can't find where to put it. I see last 4 of SS #, under personal info. When I click on "Taxpayer Settings" it takes me to Personal Info.

I can't say if it is a spam or not, but you don't need any special taxpayer ID. Your taxpayer ID is your SS number and as you mentioned, it is in your account information. If you want to run your selling as a business, you may want to set up an EIN number (Employer Identification Number), but it is not necessary.

Just ignore the email. Perhaps it was a private initiative of an eager ebay employee.

If this email does not show up in your ebay e-mail, I would give it no credulity. I parrot what Martin says.

It is in my ebay messages, so I guess I will click on the link from the message in "My Messages", should be safe, eh?

If it is in your eBay messages, on the eBay website, it should be okay.

All set now, I still think it is pretty crappy for Ebay to send an email with a clickable link, instead of just saying "sign into your account."  I fell for a phishing email once about 20 years ago, immediately realized it and changed my password. Looked just like the email I just got.

I have to say that yes, it sounds strange to me.

Previously just the last 4 numbers of your SSN were required. Now it needs to be the full SSN as eBay are updating their records for next year 2022  reporting of the 1099K's as required by the IRS.

So long as the message is in your eBay all is legit and link is safe to click.

Exactly what was said here. If it's not directly in your ebay on your PC or APP for the love of all please make sure you aren't entering it on another website with a different browser address.

eBay generally does not send emails without also sending them to your eBay Messages.
