Yesterday I got an order for a vintage perfume (75% full), surprisingly the shipment is about $35 (item worth $12). My first thought is that it must be an international order. However, it is a domestic order to CA. And it is my fault to put the item at 12lbs by mistake (should be 12 oz). I doubt why the buyer didn't pay much attention to the shipping cost.
So I contacted the buyer, and pointed out the shipping cost is high. But since I was a bit concerned that if the buyer set up a trap to claim anything wrong about the perfume when receiving it, I have been waiting for the response to see what happened there, then I could make adjustments to the shipping or simply refund later. However, the buyer hasn't responded at all.
I never sold perfume before. Is there anything I should be worried about regarding the policy?

Sorry for the confusion. My biggest concern is, why She(he) was so careless about and paid a big shipping fee. I was worried if She(he) planned on something (to get full refund) and that is why the shipping fee doesn't matter. I am sorry if my English is not good enough to understand.

Thank you! That is my hidden concern. I think I read this somewhere, but I listed it because I saw some other seller doing it. I am very confused now. Should I cancel the order?

Thank you! You are the second pointed this out and make it clear. I think I read this policy somewhere, but I listed it because I saw some other seller doing it. I am new at eBay and thank you for the help and highlight! Probably this is the reason they ordered anyways because they saw I broke the policy then they will get refund /keep the item, so $35 shipping for a 12oz parcel to CA is not an issue.

no I will refund for sure if it turned out nothing wrong. I am just looking for the answer and if anything I should be worried I will cancel the order. Thanks.

Hi thank you for your long reply. Similar thing happened to me 1-2 times. Buyer paid multi-shipping fees ( most other would contact me for combined shipping if they buy multi-things) and I send them in one parcel, refund the extra charge on shipping and sent them a message regarding it. Then no response at all, of course no positive review neither. I guess this might happen on some rich people who don't care about a bit cost, and in the meantime, they are too busy to respond.
Thank you again for your suggestion.

Honestly I think you are over thinking this. Just refund the overpayment and move on. There is no need to wait for something. You need to ship within your stated handling time on the purchase or you damage your selling account by getting a defect. And there is no good reason to hold the shipment.

Thank you! I might overthink from a PTSD of a fully refund case I just took care of last week. It is a $46 plate in great condition (no scratch and no chip, looks like it has never been used), the buyers ask for a refund since it doesn't match the description photo". He claims there are two tiny needle-tip sized speckles (which shown on pictures but I didn't point out in my description) making him worried about the longevity of the usage. I looked up the answers here and most suggestions are just refunds since none could be done as the seller. And eBay always sides with buyers. So I let him keep the plate since the shipping is expensive. And lost the plate and more than $10 on it. It made me think about the motive of the buyer. Is he honest or just a play.
I might have over-thought this case. Will ship and refund today.
Thank you all for the timely help!

Hi mam98031, while I was creating the shipping label for it, I found the actual postage for 12lb (I put in by mistake) is only around $9 to CA, how could the buyer pay $35 instead. I am so confused and worried if I missed anything there. She did chose USPS Ground Advantage.

Shipping is a completely different situation than the one you describe above. A buyer AGREES to the shipping charged on the listing when they purchase it.
You will be fine. Now they may come up with some other reason to want to return the item. But as far as shipping, that is not a reason. And if you refund part of the shipping to the buyer, then they come back later and want to return the item, you would ONLY be on the hook for the amount they paid AFTER the refund on the shipping.

I don't know. I can't see how you had your listing structured. But it would be something you had entered into the shipping Calculator. Whether it was the size or the weight or both, IDK.
But in the end it simply doesn't matter for the purposes of this transaction. For future transactions you would want to be more careful with the info you enter into the listing. But for this transaction it simply doesn't matter.
What matters is what the shipping to the buyer actually was and how much you should refund the buyer.
