Some people have no class...

So I'm sending out offers to buyers, and I made a mistake with one of them. It was pretty obvious that it was a mistake, 80% off a silver coins (so basically the buyer is getting an ounce of silver for $5, you'd have to be visiting from Mars to not realize I didn't do that on purpose).

That's all fine, I made a mistake, I'll honour the sale, no problem. I tell myself I will never learn from my mistakes if I keep bailing myself out of trouble with excuses and rationalizations.

So the buyer accepted the offer... but THEN... he writes a long "rant" type of eBay message telling me how wonderful I am, how much I must appreciate him as a customer (he's never bought from me before), how it's the greatest gift he ever got, what a generous person I am, and how he'll treasure the coin forever. (Insert finger into mouth right about now...)

OK, I get it that I made a mistake, the buyer accepted the offer, and not shipping can mean bad feedback or worse, a defect.

There's no need to write all of that knowing I made a mistake and probably feel pretty bad about letting a $27 coin go for $5... Just pay for the coin and shut your mouth. None of that noise was going to change how I proceeded with the sale after he paid.

The OP has integrity, but the buyer note would have rolled off my back in five minutes.  I wouldn't have even replied saying that it was too low but I honoured the price, I would simply have said "Thanks for your purchase!" and that's it.

It's easy to make too much out of these things, particularly when we don't personally know the buyer.  They might be like this all the time (which would be kind of annoying, yes).

"As I said some people have no class as in the seller..."

Why?  The seller made a mistake AND they honored it.  How does that make the seller have "no class"?

Since we didn't see the entire message, it is hard to say one way or the other.

Maybe the OP @sin-n-dex would consider posting the entire rant without IDing the buyer of course.

That's a learning experience and a blocked buyer in my eyes.

The community has been doing that for quite a while now.  I don't like it either.  But if you respond to the OP or if you use the smaller reply box at the very bottom of the screen, there is nothing in the "in response to" line.

I have read all the replies, but too busy to reply to each one.

What I was trying to say is that I made a mistake and felt bad, and that over the top thank you, you're the greatest human on earth message made me feel even worse. I'm not miffed the buyer thanked me, just over the top sugary sweet response is what bothered me.

I don't generally quote buyer messages in case they read what they wrote in one of my posts. I have seen my buyers posting in the forum on occasion. I feel it's better to paraphase to make my point.

You did the right thing.  Don't let anyone tell you different.

Your buyer on the other hand.  They recognized this was likely a mistake on your part yet instead of declining the offer for those reasons, they accepted it therefore they are very willing to take advantage of you.  If your buyer was sincere, they would have declined the purchase at that price.

It was that price before---that's how much I bought my silver for when it was; therefore, I don't see what the issue is here.

TBH, I'm OK with them accepting it, regardless of whether they knew on acceptance if it was a mistake. I think it was the followup that bothered me. I've sold lots of things for the wrong price due to a listing error or offer... most people buy it and pay, and that's it. Some leave feedback too. Fortunately it doesn't happen often, and usually when it does happen, I'm lot really losing much money. Probably my worst mistake in recent history was the 39.99 stamp lot that should have been 99.99 and sold in one day. It sold to a repeat buyer who purchased tons of my stamps. I'm really happy if someone benefited from that mistake it was him. (It wasn't an obvious mistake though... the buyer probably just assumed it was a good price for those stamps).

Before when, 1998? That's when I got most of my silver (for that price). I haven't kept on silver prices regularly... but we did get down to $11 an ounce in early 2020 when the pandemic started.

Yeah I don't get it the seller honored the sale. More sellers than not would have just cancelled it. He's allowed to express his frustrations. We all make mistakes.

Thanks, you understand the point of my post. (Expressing frustrations). As for honoring the sale... I've been on the receiving end of some good deals (usually auction related), and they didn't cancel on me. I bought a purse that I didn't realize was listed at 10% what the seller intended to list it for (missed decimal place) until months after I got it (it was an auction with a buy it now, I bought it now thinking it was a fair price for a used purse... didn't realize how much the purse was actually worth).

Maybe if I was off by $100 or something like that, I'd cancel and hope the buyer understands. I certainly don't want bad feedback of "doesn't honour their prices", so IMO $22 was a small price to keep my feedback relatively in tact. At least if the buyer leaves a neg when he gets his coin, it won't be because I cancelled the sale.

Yes, I just was wondering why he felt this way about the seller.  Sometimes others see something that some of us may not have considered.  That is the beauty of having a Discussion Board.  We can all learn new things all the time.

I read his post (and ignored the original comment). I suspect he said this because he feels that it's not classy behaviour to complain in a sellers forum about one of your buyers.

I like to hear what other people have to say, and when I have time, I read the forum at length (unfortunately I often don't have advice to give, or my advice is the same advice that 10 others have posted before I got to that post).

I can think of many things that shouldn't be posted in here... posting about buyers isn't on that list.

you judged the buyer as not being sincere, and came on here to blab about it? read your title again, seems like the pot is calling the kettle black. At least youre going to honor the sale, ill give you that.  alot of scum bag sellers would just end the listing. At that point if they cant take a hit of that amount then they shouldnt be trying to sell here. The buyer might decide to buy other things from you. sometimes a good deal motivates buyers to buy more, rather than attempt to force a buy by raising the price tactic. i wish more people had self control, then ebay would be back to the garage sale website it used to be known for.
