What is this about?
Just received this e-mail notice from eBay. The first I have ever seen on this subject.
I have credits and then charges, but they don't make sense.
this is the e-mail:
|
The US Postal Service has some cost adjustments on your shipping labels. We attempted to charge or credit your account based on whether you underpaid or overpaid. |
If you think these adjustments are incorrect, you can contact USPS Customer Care at 1-844-819-5187 or email verifypostagehelp@usps.gov to open a dispute. USPS will respond within 5-15 business days. |
this report I just received goes back to March 1, 2022, but this the first time I have ever seen such a report
I guess eBay's shipping input information on listings are not valid / true???? I have a scale and weigh items as needed.
example:
this was for a UCLA basketball jersey size XL

Underpaid adjustment: $1.11 (Charged)Reason: Package weight different from specifiedOriginal weight: 0 lb 1 ozActual weight: 0 lb 10 ozno way I purchased a label for a 1-ounce jersey! Is it not the rule that 13 oz. and under is first class shipping?Another example that stands out for a Notre Dame Brick:Underpaid adjustment: $1.89 (Charged)Reason: Package weight different from specifiedOriginal weight: 0 lb 1 ozActual weight: 6 lb 3 ozI shipped this priority mail, weight 6 lbs 1.7 oz.my shipping flat cost was $18.00. That includes safe packing material and safe / fragile labels. Indianapolis to South Bend!I'm exhausted folks! No wonder some of use work 2 to 3 jobs to survive because others are nickel / diming us constantly.how am I going to record these for tax filing?
Interesting. I just got one of these the other day. Was a recent sale, first class postage. Was refunded less than a buck.

Your examples look just like mine and do not make any sense as I also weigh and measure my packages so something is definitely wrong here! I will have to stop printing labels from Ebay and either stand in line at the Post Office (Ugh, nobody has time for that!) or stand in-line at UPS (another Ugh!).
I hope more people comment on this so that we have proof that something is WRONG with the system, and we are not at fault & shouldn't have to pay!
The representative that I spoke to said that the lady before me had 60 of these 'adjustments' and they can only take 10 per call! Imagine that 😓
I go to the po to drop my packages off. The clerks weigh and scan the items into the system and give me a receipt.
I keep the receipts.

I told the clerk when I go to print a label through eBay, it shows first class at 15.9 oz or less with a generous dim measurement that I thought was way off.
She told me that 13 oz or less is first class. Above that is priority.
Is eBay and the USPS not in sync?
Counter rates vs online rates. Over the counter you can only buy 13oz, online it goes to 15.99

Last year I got a couple of these. One I was refunded 11 cents, still don't know why. But another one they charged me like $10 or some such nonsense. It boiled down to the person that decided my package needed to be upgraded because it didn't qualify for the shipping method I used was wrong. They simply didn't understand the rules. It took a little time on the phone, but I got it cleared up and my money back.
So they aren't always right.

If you're buying the labels through eBay, go to labels and pull up the one with the discrepancy and see what it says the ounces were set to.

I had to print two labels this morning. This is what the first-class selection looks like. Max weight is 15.9 and dims are too generous, but I know better. I only consider 13 oz. or less as first class. the two items I'm shipping this morning are 3.6 oz. & 9.8 oz
I also noticed the signature require cost went from $2.90 to $3.10

I'm not sure where we are right now with your initial problem, but why would you only consider 13oz or less as first class mail if you are printing your labels online? Also, what does this screenshot clear up? I've shipped thousands of 1st class packages with online labels (many over 13oz) with zero notices of postage due.

Someone had asked in this thread what the screen looks like when I go to print and what the weight and dims where shown.
As far as 13oz. That is what they have always told me at the post office and again asked this past Saturday and clerk stated anything over 13oz. would go up to priority.
just don't think eBay and the USPS are working together.
If I recall the max dims of 22" x 18 " x 15" would fall into the new oversized shipping rate that went into effect in April. Curious if they meant to enter 12" x 8" x 5"?

If you buy your postage at the post office counter you can only buy First Class postage up to 13.0 ounces. If the package weighs more than that then it goes up to Priority.
But if you are buying your postage pre-paid on-line then you can buy First Class Package shipping up to 15.999 ounces in weight (and at a discount compared to the counter prices). That is the difference between retail First Class Package and on-line First Class Package.
Now - you are showing us screenshots of the lower part of the screen. At the top of the Shipping form are blanks for filling in the package dimensions and the package weight. Are you weighing your package and putting in the correct weight where indicated on the form? When you print the label, the weight you specified should be showing in the upper left corner of the label. If you see '1 ounce' showing there then something has gone wrong.
The messages you have posted earlier in this thread are stating that the labels were purchased for a package of 1 ounce. That is where the error is coming from. The automated machines verifying the postage later are reporting what looks like the true weight of the package. Its the weight given when buying the postage that looks wrong.

Retail 1st class postage purchased at the post office is limited to 13 oz, but you are buying yours online where the limit is 15.9oz and is also discounted for all amounts. Online saves lots of money.
As described, that isn't the important part of the screen shot others are asking for. They want to see the actual details for your package. What weight are you entering?

I went back to the original listing of an item I sold and clicked sell similar to see what my shipping settings were.
I did a flat rate of $10 for all buyers to cover signature cost and still being charged extra. I selected "parcel select ground". Item shipped on 24 and delivered on the 28th.
This is what the notice said:
Reason: | Package weight different from specified |
Weight on label: | 0lb 0.96oz |
Actual weight: | 0lb 12.8oz |
attached is the receipt from post office.
less than an ounce would be an envelope?

I'm sorry, but I'm just not understanding your responses to our questions or the screenshots you are providing. Since you aren't a new seller, I have to feel you know how to print your labels using the correction information, so I don't know what is happening.

Okay, when you do, the area you should be interested in is this section at the top of the form, where you state the package weight and dimensions:
The Weight section should be showing the correct weight of your package, as weighed by you. The Dimensions section should also match your package.
If you did not upload an estimated weight (or package dimensions) when you created your listing, you will probably see 0 lbs., 1 ounce for a package weight, and 1"x1"x1" for package dimensions. If so, you need to correct those numbers before you continue.
You can buy a label for those wrong values, but you will end up paying postage for a 1-ounce package instead of (in your examples) a 10-ounce package or a 7-pound package. The weight verification machines within the USPS sorting facilities will catch the postage discrepancy and bill you for the difference. The messages you have posted here are telling us that that's what happened.
Regarding the photo of a post office receipt that you showed us, that shows the correct weight of your package when you handed it over. It does not show how much postage you paid when buying the on-line label, or how much weight you declared for the package when buying that label.

I'm not sure anyone understands until it happens to them

I certainly understand the difference between buying 1st class postage online versus retail at the post office. I also understand that several have asked you what you input as the weight/dims when you print your label but you keep showing shots of things that will not solve your problem and are not what are asked for.
If it ever happens to me I know to look at what I entered when I printed my label to figure out if it was my error.
