So I'm assuming due to ebays horrible policies I am going to have to end up giving a refund, but I just sold an iPad for parts (had a broken screen) with no returns/refunds stated. It was stated in the listing that it did still turn on and is functional. The buyer messaged me today saying he received it, used it, noticed it had an iOS update, updated it, and somehow bricked it in the process and now wants a return. Is there anything I can do to get eBay to side with me on this? I know typically sellers never win these cases, but the guy literally admitted that he received it as described and that it worked, and then whatever he did somehow bricked it. On top of all of this, it was sold "for parts/not working" and "as is".

There is no such thing as no returns on Ebay. Going forward stop selling broken items especially sense your listing says it was functional.

Did the buyer open a case for Not As Described? Or is he just putting out feelers about a possible return?
If he opens a case, eBay will side with him. However, you can use the messages he sent in an appeal after the case is closed. See link below.
Your experience with this item is why i no longer list broken items. Too much risk involved.

Is this a joke? It was functional lol. It had a cracked screen. And then he bricked it trying to update it. How is that my fault?

The thing is this has nothing to do with the screen being cracked. It could have happened with a brand new ipad as well. Buyer bricks it doing an update and that's it. Nothing you can do.

It was junk when sold. Junk when returned.
I also quit selling anything broken a long time ago. Recycle or give it away.
Selling broken items is just begging for a return no matter how it is listed

Not as Described is always a lose at first. Accept the return, send a label and see if they actually return something. Ebay is not a safe space, you have very little seller protection. They aren't going to change that.
There is no such thing as For Parts/Not Working/As-is on this platform even though ebay allows you to select that for a condition. Their MBG covers every transaction and because it is an automated process your only recourse is to comply. No human eyes or brains are going to consider the circumstances to make a decision. Hope the buyer is just phishing for free money and not actually a scammer stealing it.
I feel if you want to sell an item for parts then do not describe it beyond what it is and general condition i.e. used. A real parts buyer will know what they want from the item and will ask if not sure. Still if the buyer wants to INAD then it is back to accept, label, wait.
Best.

@rodo-2669 Not one bit a joke. Very serious, do not sell broken stuff on Ebay. It will haunt you and get you eventually booted. Also, if a buyer goes to do an update and it no longer works that is on YOU, not the buyer.

Wut. That's like saying that if the buyer loaded any software on the device and it bricked, it's the seller's fault. Seller had nothing to do with buyer's updates. iPads are notorious for bricking on updates and that an be dealt with, but it's not the seller's problem. An update is simply that - an update.

Updating ios software is not downloading a software off the internet the ipad is designed for that. If it cant do that it is not functional. Furthermore the updates are very important from a security standpoint.

Okay, so I can buy a brand new iPad on ebay from someone, update it, brick it, and return it then? Sounds like a plan.

That's correct. It is designed for that. And it was working when shipped. The buyer probably did something stupid while updating and bricked it. Let me go buy a brand new ipad, turn it off while it's updating, then go complain to the seller it's bricked.

The buyer obviously messed something up.... it was fine when sent. Ebay shouldn't have a category for listing broken stuff then.

Yes, as long as the eBay return is filed within 30 days of the delivery date.
Credit card chargebacks allow generally ~90 to 180 days.
PayPal allows 180 days

Buyers don't have to complain to sellers. They just open a return and select item not as described or doesn't work. It is an automated process from there.
