So I'm assuming due to ebays horrible policies I am going to have to end up giving a refund, but I just sold an iPad for parts (had a broken screen) with no returns/refunds stated. It was stated in the listing that it did still turn on and is functional. The buyer messaged me today saying he received it, used it, noticed it had an iOS update, updated it, and somehow bricked it in the process and now wants a return. Is there anything I can do to get eBay to side with me on this? I know typically sellers never win these cases, but the guy literally admitted that he received it as described and that it worked, and then whatever he did somehow bricked it. On top of all of this, it was sold "for parts/not working" and "as is".

Hi @rodo-2669
I've seen several posts recently where eBay has been allowing returns for items listed as 'Not working; for parts only'. Those listings USED to be exempt from SNAD returns ... but now they're not apparently.
You can't win this ... only make things worse. eBay will refund the buyer (with your money) and let them keep the brick. You'll also forfeit your fees and receive a defect. I'm really sorry, but that's how it is. 😖

I certainly hope you will not punish an unknown seller because you are mad at your buyer.
**bleep** for tat? Two wrongs don't make a Right...and all that.

So many people replying along the lines of "that's how it is, buyers can return anything for any reason, don't sell things that are broken, it's all automated, etc."
It SHOULD NOT be all of those things. "Parts or not working" should be just that, parts or not working and not eligible to be returned as long as the buyer gets the item in whatever condition is shown in photos.
Take this item for example 304637430404 Gold Line Digital RTA. At the time I sold it, it may have been the only one available on eBay, so it was worth $400 to someone. I don't know the first thing about a Gold Line Digital RTA or how to use it or verify if it works or not, so it was sold for parts or not working. The buyer took a chance and that chance paid off for him and he left feedback saying it worked perfectly.
Based on all the replies here, I should not have sold this item, just trashed it with a recycler, not made about $325 and the buyer should not have been able to find it here. eBay should be a place where buyers can take a chance on broken or untested items and sellers of those items should not have to accept returns. If some sellers abuse that option and knowingly selling stuff that is 100% junk, there is a tool for that - negative FB to warn other buyers.

@chapeau-noir Agree to disagree. If I buy an Ipad and try updating it and it stops working, believe me I will return it.

It was already broke. You're mistaken, throw it away.

Sellers can sell anything they want as long it is worth the risk. Those that don't consider the risk factors and know ebay policies end up here on the boards.
You describe an eBay from the year 2000. Things will never be like that again.
Next thing coming will be that all items are returnable that are sold on eBay.
Maybe before that, buyers will be refunded as soon as their returned item gets a delivery scan. Sellers will have to refund before receiving the item.
Probably just a matter of time.

I keep saying that they want all of us to be mini Amazon stores because I believe that is the main competition is for eBay....and believe me when I say it...it doesn't matter if you are a lil one person operation or a huge corporation selling on here.
You're an Amazon store and you are going to have Amazon level specs to follow.
And I believe the knots are going to get tightened on the sellers before they are ever loosened.

What's odd is that the update problem isn't that uncommon - it's usually either a settings problem or a storage problem - sometimes the update is incompatible with the OS. If I got a busted iPad for cheap and it was still functional, I'd just fix it. 🤔

I would too...but what do we know?

Yeah - one reason I update any computer before I sell it. It at least takes that out of the way.

They follow Amazon step by step. Just always a few years behind on most initiatives eBay wants to emulate.
Not a bad thing for buyers.

Still just 2 feedback and no listings?

No feedback in over a year cool? Net feedback of 2 over 10 years?

"Coolections" is a posting ID - a lot of people here have them, but are experienced sellers.

You will probably get a different one back that is bricked or he broke something changing the screen. I've updated thousands of iPads, never had a issue.
- signed a guy who sells tons of broken stuff, especially iPads.
