I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

Isn't every seller on Ebay here to make a profit too? Isn't this just the way of the world, to make a buck? I'm a seller here and I fully intent to make a profit and I do.

I recently became required to give this information as well after eBay switched my payment processing to be done by them instead of PayPal. I know for a fact that I didn't give an SS to PP because I don't have one. I'm in the US on a student visa for college and I haven't done any work here before. I sell a few collectibles from my collection sometimes so this is just weird that I need something I don't possess to use eBay. Does this mean I will no longer be able to sell things now? By the way I've selling a few things here and there for the last 3 years or so.

It's okay if you make a profit. It's not okay if "they" make a profit.

Talk to an International Student Advisor at your school. If you are on an F-1 Sudent Visa you may, as you know, work up to 20 hours per week on-campus. But to work off-campus (and selling on eBay would be considered off-campus work), you need work authorization. Your ISA can tell you whether or not you qualify. I frankly doubt that you will, but talk to your ISA.
If you receive the authorization, you may then apply for a Social Security Number. If you receive an Employment Authorization Document, you'll need that EAD along with your passport, original I-20, I-94 record, proof of employment, and perhaps other paperwork, to apply for the SSN. Again, your ISA will guide you on this.
If you are on a J-1 Student Visa, the process is slightly different and will also require permission by your sponsor. If you are on an M-1 Student Visa you may not work at all, period.
Credentials: Now retired, but worked in international programs at a large university, and a quick on-line check verified that this info is still current.

So you admit to wanting to evade taxes...on a public forum...

Paypal buffers your account through your credit card or paypal credit and has also debit card. The ebay option would leave your bank account open to hacking.

HOW? Be specific. How is Ebay leaving it open to hacking? Are you actually saying Ebay is not doing anything to protect our information?

Giving your SS# to anyone is your choice; however, in this particular instance, if you don't give the required information to eBay for MP, then you will not be allowed to sell on eBay any more.
I believe the SS # requirement is an IRS/banking requirement, not an eBay requirement per se.

Please take a trip out to a desert somewhere for a couple of weeks and see how well you do without the support of taxpayer money. No services or paved roads. Enjoy your five gallon toilet because there won't be any sewer service. The infrastructure to install power lines or underground lines costs money. Using a motorhome is not allowed in your tax-free experiment. Hmm, everything we mail is pretty much supported through taxes so you might as well stop using the USPS. Yes, even UPS and FedEx cost us taxes because THEY pay the taxes in order to operate when we use their service.
My guess is that most of the people who complain about taxes are not home owners. They are not fully invested in society and might enjoy the game of avoiding paying taxes at any cost. They may be renters so they pay some taxes through their rent. The older you get the more you realize that taxes is the grease that keeps society moving. Which direction we have been moving since the 1990's is up for debate somewhere else.
What else? Turnstile jumpers and shoplifters come to mind. They want mobility without accountability because they feel like the "system" owes them something. I may not have kids but I don't hold back the portion of my property taxes that go to school districts. Sometimes people just can't see beyond their own existence and don't realize the harm they cause by not paying their fair share.
Ok, that's my Monday morning rant. They are not hard to find.
