I have been a Ebay member buyer/seller since 1999 untill recently my account was frozen because I refuse to give up my SSN. No one should have to give up there SSN.the reason is that you will be reported to the IRS so that you will have to pay more taxes because its earn income.most of us who rely on making a few dollars are tax those of us who are retire and living on fix social security income depend on flea markets and garage sales for extra cash it's going to get to a point if you stop to use a restroom you will be tax it's out of control . I will close my account with Ebay and sell where I'm not under pressure to keep them happy the more you sale on Ebay the better they look there employees get pay and there stocks go up.

"I sell many used items that I have purchased in the past. The sale of the item shouldn't be taxable, only the profit. How are they going to determine what your profit is? They can't just go by sales."
Only the profit is taxable. The original purchase price of the item is deductible, whether you're a big business or an individual cleaning your closet. Take a look at Schedule C and its instructions to understand how the IRS looks at this.

No company should need your social security number so I am leaving after 20 good years with eBay . Pay pal and Venmo never ask for a social . Selling childhood nic Nacs for fun shouldn’t require power to steal my identity and my mortgage

Actually I added a checking and eBay still demands a social or no access .

This has nothing to do with "tax evasion". It has to do with Identity theft. eBay is an international company with a poor reputation for being hacked by European and Asian thieves. Not interested. I do better on Craigslist and FB Marketplace.
Goodbye.

Why are you surprised by that, they told you that you had to provide it. MP is required to get it, they aren't doing it just to annoy you.

Now you are just passing around bad information. A simple Google search would prove what you have said is incorrect. Ebay was hacked ONCE in about March of 2014. Hackers got some email addresses and some encrypted passwords but nothing else. The hackers NEVER were able to unencrypt the passwords and therefore NEVER got any financial or personal information on ANY member of Ebay.
So you are just passing garbage information around with no support just what you want others to believe for whatever reason you may have. If you have some facts, but what you are saying is defamatory and libelous.

I think the whole thing is a sham - rich people pay no taxes - middle class pay double on selling a used item which they have already paid taxes on. IRS cant collect taxes from big corporate America and china ? so lets milek already struggling old, poor and miserables? it is a misery distribution for all - welcome to the new America
02-05-2021 03:08 AM
and one more reason why it is a sham? you need to transfer your money to a bank anyways, IRS can get you there easily it is all under surveillance by IRS including all your credit card, paying honest taxes is good for a country I am not against it - and IRS takes is from my paychecks no matter what - now asking for SN# is way too much , not IRS justified - it is to double tax and milk poor - go get that tax from people who own millions and bankrupt like a serial killer! but you cant? why caus they have lawyers

I'd love it if someone stole my mortgage.

Now it's my turn to go (after 19 years). No business, no store - just selling some old useless stuff around my house. Gave my bank account to ebay - stupid me. Now I can't delete it (it says you "must" have bank account with them). And I can't get paid unless ebay gets my SSN. Why not ask for credit cards and 401K and W2s.
Craiglist and forums are still there and do not need my SSN. It was great while ebay was good to simple people.
Bye everybody

I have a conspiracy theory to proffer!
eBay has long been hampered in making changes to its platform and other things by what the CEO once called a "habituated buyer base!" So the theory is that the switch to MP and requirement for a SS would be the 'straw that broke the camels back" for those 'old timers' and they would leave in droves! What a better way to get rid of those pesky, crabby, old people than to have then self select & quit?! 80% of CS issues were from those 20% of small sellers, and they only account for a small percentage of the revenues anyway, so if we can get rid of them we can increase profits!
Guess all of those that are leaving are falling for this? Fear is a powerful motivator and I bet eBay knew this would cull the herd in an advantageous way!
Me? I'll keep selling, but spend most of my profits buying various ID theft protection programs and a moat around the house with electric fence to keep undesirables out!

Selling on a site that does not require your SSN does not relieve you of the requirement to report your income to IRS.
Sometimes for those only selling used stuff around the home, while they still need to claim it on their federal tax return, they may not have any effect on their taxes they need to pay. It depends on the expenses of it all.
Every single transaction is a business transaction.

I agree
Not sure why there is such a misconception BUT if you sell your personal items even for a loss or purchase items intended for resale you still need to claim the income to the IRS and then explain your numbers.
Same also goes for many states as sales tax is collected, you are still required to explained the sales tax collected and that it was remitted by eBay.
Tax on the Federal level and State level is something today that you cannot hide from and why not be truthful and claim it instead of hiding in the dark wondering if "they will find out"

I'm one of those "crabby old timers". We aren't all leaving. I'd venture a guess that it isn't even most of us but only some. Just like when Ebay made PP mandatory sellers were upset just like they are now with many of the same complaints. It was suppose to be the end of Ebay making it mandatory so some left. It is the same now with MP.
For those that learn the facts of how MP actually functions and if they are running a profitable little business on this site, it really doesn't make a good business decision for many of us to leave. As in any job there are aspects of the job we don't much like. To me, that is just part of life as I've known it. Every moment just isn't a joy in business or in our personal lives.
It seems from reading most of the threads it is mostly casual sellers that are leaving with some that sell on a regular basis. But mostly the casual sellers because they don't like the delays in how money is disbursed from MP and that is understandable really. For many of them they will do fine on Facebook and Craigslist.
But sellers that sell on a more regular basis that isn't necessarily true. Those may not be good choices. They may be giving up doing a good business here on Ebay. So others will decide to stay.
It is just a choice for each of us to make for what is right for us. Hopefully they actually learn how MP actually functions or even tries it for awhile before making the leap to leave. But again a choice for each of us to make.
Ebay has protected our account information for 25+ years. There is no reason to believe that because we give them our SSN that they are suddenly going to stop protecting our information. That comes from those trying to spin reasons for not entering MP that are completely unnecessary and unhelpful to anyone as the only reason anyone needs is that they don't want to sign up. Nothing further than that is needed.

If you are a long time user from the time before eBay sold PayPal and the 2 companies parted ways most likely eBay already has your social security number on file some were along with the rest of your personal information.
