I was one of the fortunate winners in the eBay Open Swag contest.
Once I inserted the batteries to the shipping scale, the middle button to switch modes remains on grams and I want to switch it to ounces.
If anyone wants to know the model number, it is SF-400.
The obvious question is--if that part of the machine doesn't work, would I have to end up returning it for one that does work? I would sure hate to recycle it, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah unfortunately the sf 400 is more of a food/letter/drug scale, as it is set up to display either grams or ounces rather than a true postage scale that uses ounces and pounds. With that said the scale is rated for up to 10 kgs or 22 lbs.
Here is a YouTube video that shows you how to switch it over from grams to ounces. After that just divide you results by 16 to compute the package's weight into pounds.
Go to 1 minute 20 seconds to view switching weights.

You need to submit an INAD return request to eBay. They will have 3 days to respond to your request. If they don't resolve your issue by then, you can ask eBay to step in. They will probably decide to refund you what you paid for it.

I recommend emailing (from the email account associated with your eBay account) ebaysellerevents@ebay.com to explain that the scale you received as an eBay Open swag contest winner is defective and that you would like a replacement.

I received the same scale and at first I though the same. There is a button to push, may have to push it hard. I'm not home now to check. But I got mine to ounces. It looks like a nice little scale. It's now my upstairs scale, so I'm not running down to my work area each time I question weight on something going out.

Sounds like whoever was in charge of choosing eBay swag for their giveaway didn't read the details. 🙄
As someone who got the in-person meeting swag bag on Day One (details here), I did kind of wonder why I had been awarded two different tape measures when one would have been plenty, but I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth...

I paid less than $20 Cdn for my Starfrit digital scale ten years ago. I have replaced the battery once.
Time is money.

I have a digital scale that's over 10 years old, suitable for weighing items up to 4 pounds and 15.99 ounces. I use it for smaller items and calibrate it with counter packages, aiming for an accuracy within a gram or so. At the post office, I verify its accuracy by comparing it with their scales.
For items over 5 pounds, I use a older mechanical scale, which is quite accurate for heavier weights. I, again, regularly compare its readings with those at the post office to ensure its accuracy.

U B "Old School" and I'm a '44 model but I do wear a Seiko Automatic Watch (manual main spring - very accurate - just move your wrist - bought it at an estate sale 5 bucks. Retired my still working 1963 Bulova Accutron Space View electric, battery operated wrist watch 10k gold bezel with tuning forks (not so accurate in today's world - within a minute off every day) price $150 new HS graduation gift. You could buy a Ford Mustang in 1964 for about $2000 plus tax and delivery (stripped down w/ six cylinder, manual trans, no radio, cloth interior, no A/C or Power steering) and dog dish hub caps.
Time changes every thing.

In this case, "old school" just means irrational thinking.
My scale -- purchased on eBay at least 15 years ago -- is still dead-on accurate. How do I know? Because I periodically check it against my USPS counter receipts.
There might be reasons to forgo a scale, but distrusting their accuracy isn't one of them.
