Shipping and boxes

I sell a variety of items and I’m considering going to all priority shipping and or buying boxes. What is the most economical?  I started out priority and buyers keep asking for cheaper slow shipping I’m at a crossroads. Any advice is appreciated

Re: Shipping and boxes

USPS flat rate boxes are free from the USPS website or from your local post office.  These days it is pretty easy to find family, friends, and neighbors who you can ask for their boxes from Amazon and other online vendors.  And Ebay has some of the best prices for boxes and other packaging materials at prices far less than Uline although Uline has better quality if you are shipping more expensive goods.

Re: Shipping and boxes

my bad....2 clarifications...

In my short cut thinking, I add 3 zones to my location, and from then on, the prices are negligible.....(based on the ebay calculator in retail mode)

but you are correct, it was misleading to anyone reading it

Re: Shipping and boxes

I don't have the energy to be that strategic. I just set up my listings with calculated shipping for  First Class for up to 15.99 ounces and regular Priority for anything above that. Sometimes the Regional boxes are the best value, but I rarely have anything that would be cheaper in a flat rate box.

Re: Shipping and boxes

I like the flat rate boxes, they keep things simple, for simple people like me. I like to use Priority Mail, one thing I think it pays to be mindful of, the most inexpensive rate may not necessarily be a good idea due to the way things are handled. Fragile items for example. Generally speaking, I think the faster an item travels through the system, the better overall. The situation to be avoided are large, heavy items like a huge box of Encyclopedias getting thrown on top of your box of antique figurines when thrown to the shipping containers. The lower tier postage rates are how the anvils, leaf springs, and rock collections get sent.

Re: Shipping and boxes

I am just the opposite. I love the flat rate boxes for anvils, leaf springs and rocks. I can ship a 50 pound box from Virginia to California using a large flat rate box (they come in a variety of sizes) for about $19. The next cheapest option is UPS ground which is about $60, regular priority mail about $130.

In contrast to ship a 3 pound vase from Virginia to California is about $12 going USPS parcel select ground, calculated priority mail about $18 and large flat rate box about $20.

Calculated shipping is the only way to go as far as I am concerned as you can offer lower total cost items.

we compare rates between regular priority, priority flat rate, regional rate, cube rate and UPS for heavier items, hardly ever use med or large fr anymore as they are just to expensive.
