Shipping Defects out of my control

Hello first time seller,  I went to a UPS store with the items I was shipping and the packaging slip. I went there since I’ve never shipped before and told him that I had no clue what I was doing and , if I could pay for packaging supplies, or packaging tape so that the products got delivered securely. The person behind the counter told me don’t worry about it. I will be able to ship them out for you and make sure everything‘s safe. However, I just received pictures from the buyer and the items got scratched up in the delivery stage. How should I go about this? Am I liable or is it on UPS and will my funds be on hold? I plan on doing a partial refund for the individual who bought them is that normal to do?

Use the pictures and file a claim with UPS, did you pay for them to pack it? BUT you are liable with the item with your buyer. and UPS is liable with the item with you. Both are different parts of the chain. What does the buyer want? Partial Refund or Return for Refund?

Also have more confidence in yourself. It is just packing an item into a box it is not rocket science. Just know items can break if pack too tight or too loose. Watch packing videos on youtube.

'items got scratched'...I am assuming these are the bicycle parts that got scratched?

I wouldn't do a partial refund.

You might be getting played...buyer can scratch items that will get scratched from eventually being used and want a partial refund...

Talk to UPS to see what they say if they themselves packed it...they are liable for damage.

If you packed it...that would be a return with a return label which you would pay.

If these were pictures or breakables I can understand a refund.

I bet if you did a return buyer wouldn't return them if they are the bicycle parts because buyer assumes to use them now and not shop for others like these in the future.

First off, don't pack and ship with UPS.  You're paying way way way too much.

What does your buyer want?  Replacement?  Full refund?  Partial refund?

He hasn’t stated what he’d want yet, the listing said no refunds but I don’t want to be that guy sinxe the parts showed up scratched do to the packaging. I went into UPS asking if I needed to pay for packaging materials so I could do it myself and was told they would take car of that for me and makesure everything was secure. What exactly would ups be able to refund me for? The selling amount?

Alright I will speak with UPS but what exactly could they refund me for? Also if the buyer puts in a complaint and try’s to get a refund even tho the listing says no refunds how does that work? Am I able to explain to eBay the packaging and damage was out of my control since I have pictures on the listing of what the parts looked like? Becuase it says I can only get my money if the buyer approves everything, but it also says no refunds on the listing so I’m just confused if I’ll still get paid or not.

All of the other mailing stores are closed before and after work so I was only able to go to UPS sadly. And he hasn’t stated yet, the listing says no refunds but wasn’t sure if I’d still get my funds or not since they are on hold until he approves . I’m just confused on the whole process tbh

Need to understand Ebay's Money back Guarantee

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy/ebay-money-back-guarantee-policy...

A no return policy doesn't work if a buyer claims the item he received is Not As Described.......in that case, a seller MUST accept a return and refund the total paid by the buyer.  Seller will have to cover the return postage UNLESS he decides to not get the item back.

No one will care about carefully packing your ebay items as much as you will. You need to do it yourself.

If the buyer puts in a  complaint you will need to accept the return and give them a full refund when you get your item back.
You are responsible for getting your items to the buyer in the condition shown in the listing

When you set up your listing saying "no refunds", you need to be aware that, if your buyer states an item was not as described, that statement has no standing.

Have you read eBay's Money Back Guarantee for buyers?

You really need to quit clinging to your "no refunds" stance since it has no play if the buyer opens an item not described case.

Yeah you don't need to go to mailing stores. Get yourself some boxes/envelopes/packing paper/tape...etc and package your own items.

If applicable (it was a little unclear from your original post), you'd want to refer to the UPS Store Pack & Ship Guarantee: https://www.theupsstore.com/about/pack-ship-guarantee

Specifically, this section is probably the most relevant:

If a participating The UPS Store® location packs your item using only new materials purchased at that participating location, and ships the package via UPS or USPS (on that participating location’s applicable UPS or USPS account) and that item is damaged or lost in transit, you’ll be reimbursed*:

  • The item's value (subject to the lesser of actual value, replacement or repair cost)
  • The full retail price you paid for packaging materials and services
  • Your cost for shipping (excluding Declared Value charges or costs for Insurance as applicable)

For UPS shipments, if you do not declare the value of the item at the time of the transaction and purchase Declared Value for that amount, your maximum reimbursement for the item’s value is $100.
