Selling a literal 1/1 high value item and avoiding SNADs & scams.

Hi,

I have a 1 of 1 item in the video game & electronics category that I am the only known owner of. If the item gets stolen or not returned back to me, there is no way i or anyone else can find another one (anytime soon at least). What is the best way for me to sell this safely on ebay and avoid getting the item stolen or scammed. Is there a way I can do an in person delivery since this item might go for $7500+? What would you all do if you were placed in my shoes?

Any answers are welcome 🙂

Unless something has changed on Mercari, returns are MUCH more difficult for a buyer there @luckythewinner . My wife used it a few times, UNTIL she got something not as described. She bought one of those stretchy outfits and the leg had a hole right where the kneecap is. She notified the seller, thinking that they must have had a oversite when checking it over before selling it. She had to send pictures of the damage, THREE different times, with it on and off. Mercari CS required it to process the return. It took three days to get it approved. You only get ONE response a day from Mercari CS.

No, I would not say scamming is bad on all ecommerce sites. There was nothing easy or automatic about filing an INAD with Mercari. My wife no longer uses the platform. The seller fought it the whole way and Mercari CS made it VERY difficult to return an item that showed up with holes in it, that were not disclosed in the listing. No idea if the lack of truth in the description was purposeful or not, but the seller was a jerk about the return. My wife was very upset, because she wanted the outfit pretty badly.

Do not list anything you can not afford to lose. You are going to list a high fraud item!!!!!!!!!!

You will be scammed !!!!

If it were mine, I'd contact Heritage Auctions.

Yeah, and all sales final.

For the kind of money we're talking about here I wouldn't mind going through the usual FB rigmarole that a sale usually entails (i.e.: setting up a time and a place, going there, hoping they show and actually have the money etc etc)...

@farmalljr  I am assuming that your wife was simply attempting a return, and is not practiced in the art of perpetrating fraud.

I agree. I heard heritage house is good. Once they get the item, they inspect it, and it is in their hands. They deal with any problems. They only deal in high value items.

You would be correct.

But neither is every case of fraud/scamming, a case of a chargeback. How many get empty box returns, or returns of something other than what they sent? How much questioning or resistance does eBay put up? There is a total zero sum of F's given by eBay. About ANY reason a buyer gives, buyers can get a return/refund. Even when you get rocks back. eBay has no F's to give.

The fact that scams might be easier on eBay does not mean that I would recommend a seller list a $7500 item on a platform like Mercari where fraud is also a risk.

IMHO it would be very little comfort to the OP to know that the chargeback scam that stole his item on Mercari was slightly more work for the scammer than it would have been on eBay 🙂

I know everyone is saying to not sell it here but if you look at any sports cards, Kobe Bryant rookie, as an example, you will see hundreds selling daily for thousands of dollars. I cannot imagine all those sellers are getting ripped off. Remember these boards are for those who have problems. It is all up to you and your threshold of taking a chance I guess.

I didn't recommend that it be sold on Mercari. I recommended he sell it locally for cash in hand or send it to an auction house.

My point is, while there IS fraud on other platforms, one comes to mind in particular, where fraud is almost welcomed and encouraged. You make it sound like it just as common on one platform as another, and I would staunchly disagree with that. While it does happen, other platforms seem to take, at least a little, more posture against people who scam others.

If it "might go" for that much, why sell it?  Wait 10+ years, then contact Sotherby's.

Sort of off topic (apologies) but reading some of the posts about Auction Houses and what they charge in the US - WOW - over here no AH charges less than 25% and the majority is up around 35% and you have to ship the item to them and back again if it gets passed in.
