I need six 1" glass marbles for a project.
I came across a listing for 2 pounds of 1" glass marbles for $23.99 with free shipping.
I'm not sure how many marbles are in 2 pounds but i'm sure t's way more than i need.
I messaged the seller and explained how i only need 6 marbles. If he would be willing to sell me 6, let me know how much.
The seller replied with "sorry such a small amount is not cost worthy for me to sell". Why would he say that without knowing how much i'm willing to pay for 6 of them? Why not make me an offer? 6 marbles for $5 or 6 marbles for $10 or 6 marbles for $20 ... whatever he thinks is worth his time and effort? But to just say "NO" is very poor business sense in my opinion.

Why not go to another seller, there are thousands of marble listings here! Why get upset over this one seller. They have a right to sell the way they want, they know what's cost effective for them.I'm not upset.
Typically, when folks start threads on these boards, invest quite a bit of time defending their viewpoint, engage in shoulding on people, and use sarcasm to rebut other people's points-of-view, whether one calls it being upset or something else, it seems to me that there's some kind of emotional element.
But just as on the old Mary Tyler Moore show, what she was upset at her boyfriend about wasn't really the anchovies on the pizza, this doesn't really seem to be about marbles.
I'm generalizing, of course.

Well, I invested 7 seconds to read all 7 pages and I still don't know what the story is about 🙂

This thread is still alive!
Good morning amp!
This thread is about me saying ... in my opinion, as a seller, you shouldn't turn down an offer if you haven't heard what the offer is yet.
And of course everyone else's valued opinions on the subject.
Let's let this thread RIP already. LOL
Have a great hump day!

Some people like to haggle. Many don't. I think it's cultural and personality based. Half of my family are hagglers. The other half are strongly opposed to haggling. It actually makes them very uncomfortable, almost sick to their stomach. You are a haggler. This particular seller is not. Accept it. Move on.
we must have been typing at the same time. rip.

Coming up with a way that you can handle on your own to get what you want and not expect favors will help you avoid upset and disappointment~such as finding a lesser quantity of marbles for sale, buying a larger quantity if you can't find a lesser quantity for sale, or buying the hamburger and bun and tossing the burger. Relying on your own solution will lessen the outrage you feel when people don't comply with your wishes.
Just want to add coming up with your own solution not only saves you upset, it saves time, too, and makes the lives of those you come in contact with easier as well. In the example of wanting meat, having to go through employees, the manager, and the owner upset at least three other people and took some time to arrive at the outcome the OP desired. Yes, he/she got the meat she wanted, but at the cost of disruption, possibly bad feelings, and wasted time. Of course one could say it was worth it because the desired outcome was achieved, but there is a saying, pick your battles~and not everything is worth all that, IMO.
To the previous poster~I don't think this is haggling. Haggling is going back and forth over price. This was a special request. Haggling never happened as price was never mentioned.

Well, I have had requests of the same caliber.
I listed a bunch of CDs, and immediately received requests to sell them some individual CDs. I had a couple of CDs worth $ hundreds, so I replied: "first CD will be $100, second $50, third $25, the rest are $10 a piece.
Never heard from them again. They were basically picking my lot. They were Ebay sellers trying to make a buck on my things, nothing rare, just a way to make a living but I am not selling cheap, most of the times.
I've said it before, sometimes breaking a lot is not economically savvy. That's all.

WHY DIDN'T YOU MAKE THE BLOODY OFFER TO BEGIN WITH?!
I'll tell you why, you knew the seller would say no, and you needed an excuse to come scold other sellers.

General response.
I messaged for a BIN on an auction listing, seller said yes, I bought and paid. Seller had another item I was interested in, and I hoped for combined shipping, but the seller wanted to let that auction run (it had no bids, as did the one I bought). Her right to do so. She sent the item I had bought and paid for and that was that.
The listing ended Monday. Item didn't sell, and I have moved on. It was her choice.
Regarding haggling, although price was never mentioned, seller did indicate it was not worth his time to accommodate the OP's request~but that shut down any haggling that might have occurred. In a special request situation, haggling may not be appropriate as you are asking for a favor or special treatment.

Aloha inhawaii.
frankly I am amazed that a thread about a guy losing his marbles could run to 8 pages 🙂
I do hope that you find them and that life on Hawaii is good, there can't be any crime there that's for sure, with Steve McGarret and Dog taking care of business!
anyway, peace and good luck to all genuine buyers and sellers on planet ebay.

And so it continues.
The thread was about so much more than marbles. The OP wanted something special and wanted to shame people who don't want to give in to special requests.
On one of my IDs I sell a low cost repeatable item that involves some artistry on my part. I get buyers all the time that want me to customize my items for them and still expect to pay my same price for it, like they are doing me some sort of favor. When I tell then that I charge a $60.00 per hour graphic's artist charge and their customization will take about 2 to 3 hours, they exhibit some of the same attitudes as we've seen in this thread... Like I'm missing out on some new way of generating sales or something.

@inhawaii wrote:EXAMPLE: I went to a burger place once and asked if i could buy just the buns for a burger. I was told NO. What they should have told me was YES, but it will cost me the same price as a burger.
Some rules are very silly indeed . Speaking of those elegant first class burger joints though . Okay it was girls night out so me and a few friends went to our favorite sports bar one Saturday night . At 2 A.M closing time we decided not to take our car but instead just walk to the fast food place that was in the same parking lot . Their front door was closed so we went through the drive thru on foot ,, placed our order at that talkie thing[ hic!] and then walked up to the window to pay. They refused to sell us anything after they seen we weren't in a car . What was the difference? Go figure. Tulips

Personally, I make it a rule never to get into arguments or debates with people who are about to control what happens to my body. That includes people in food services, people in medical services, and people in law enforcement.
There was a documentary on UK TV a few years ago, and it showed us what was caught on security cameras. Airline and restaurant staff who were dealing with argumentative customers were spitting in their food and doing other stuff before they served it up. The staff forgot about the security cameras. Everyone who got busted on the documentary got fired from the airlines and restaurants.

The last time I did that the potential buyer then didn't like the price I came up with for their request and didn't buy after all. So if you do this, at least give the seller your idea of pricing to save time and help them decide if they will do this for you. fernwood
Agreed . I never minded taking special requests for my jewelry items but now I'm getting tired of trying to comply with every wish just to get silence at the other end when all is completed . I was contacted by someone who was interested in a '' loss of a pet cat '' theme living memory locket I had for sale ,, except she said she needed three of them altogether and would I mind creating two more ? I told her I would but they would need to be listed just like the first one and then she could make the purchase and get a discount with the volume pricing . So I made them according to her specifications,, took the photos, wrote out the descriptions, listed them and then notified her thru my message box .. Crickets ,, nothing but crickets .. It sure is nice to know that there are people out there who have no problem putting other people to a lot of work based on a promise they refuse to keep and not offer an apology or even an explanation . :{ Tulips

Do you ever get people telling you that you should give them art for free in return for "exposure"? I've heard artists love those, lol.
