I sold an item for $150 and added $20 what UPS told me it would cost for shipping for its size and weight.
The buyer was arguing about the $20 shipping and I said it was what UPS told me. So he paid $170, and Ebay took $22 fee. So now the shipping is in me and free I guess??!! Ebay has us all in the charity business now?

Look on the bright side.
It could have been worse.
Some sellers use eBay UPS shipping labels, and then later, upon delivery by the carrier, get hit with a "surcharge" that is sometimes staggering.

So now shipping is on me?

The buyer paid $20 in shipping fees to YOU. You now take that and pay the shipping company.
eBays FVF are a percentage of the item cost + shipping + tax
It is all spelled out in Sell at the bottom of the page.
Should not be a surprise.

How much did you expect the fees to be?

The "shipping" was always "on you" as you say - e-Bay (unlike their Behemoth competitor), does not "ship" for you to your customer.
If you charged $20 in shipping, hopefully, $20 or less, covers the amount to ship to the customer. If it does not, it comes out of your proceeds minus fees, as the Seller sets the shipping and it is their cost to bear - not the Buyer's.
(Unfortunately, this is all "selling 101". You have significant FB for a Seller asking this type of question? Are we being punked on a holiday weekend?? Confused......🤔)

You set the shipping price and the buyer paid you. Yes, the shipping is on you... whatever the actual cost.

I wonder if you are used to selling things for $3.00, $4.00, maybe $18.00, and then you sell something for $150.00.
And suddenly 12.55% of that $150.00 is a pretty big number.
It's still 12.55%. That's why eBay's fees, like many other fee-charging entities, are stated as percentages.
Even religious organizations, you know? Tithing means committing to give the church or temple or mosque, whatever, ten percent of your income. Obviously, a part-time fast-food worker would be committed to donate fewer dollars than, say, a partner in a law firm.
There's a consignment shop in my town that I love to browse through. I took two Stiffel lamps to them a few years ago. Their fee is Fifty Percent. One half of the selling price is what they keep. I accepted that because I needed to clear out space in my home and I did not want to deal with packing and shipping if I had tried to sell them on eBay.
Sellers need to be educated on what they are getting into with the internet platform or consignment store they use for selling their products. And take a deep breath and accept the dollar amounts they are charged.

So you think the fees are becoming excessive here, have you been to the gas pumps lately?

The math is is what it is. You can't stop the fees from being deducted from your total payment. I doubt you would feel much better seeing what you end up with after fees without that twenty dollars paid on top by the buyer.

How long you been selling??
Shipping is always on you always has been.
Purchaser pays you shipping and then you pay shipper.
Got it????
As for eBay fees its the item total, plus shipping received, plus tax. Then the final value fee is calculated, plus .30.
Also any listing cost and promotions are also costing you..
Again an seller who supposedly has been selling for years does not have a clue to what it has or does cost to sell on eBay.
Must never have kept books it seems..

Don't exactly understand the issue. You state that shipping was $20.
The buyer paid you for the item, $150, plus the shipping fee, $20.
You use the $20 to pay for shipping.
What fee did you expect to be charged? Was there also state sales tax that the buyer paid?
Your FVF is based on the total amount paid by the buyer, item price, shipping and state sales tax, if any.

Glad to learn I was not the only person confused here.

"It's still 12.55% of that $150" Actually, it is 12.55% of that $140 plus that $20 plus the state sales tax, if any.

Yes, the fee's are quite high to me, this is why I sell elsewhere. Other online sites are all pretty much the same as I see it. AWFUL search engines, attempting to sell customers what they are not asking for etc. I prefer shows.
It is amazing to me the sellers who use this platform. They make it work and I must say I am quite impressed.
I sold here since 1999, due to fees and other issues I choose to sell elsewhere. I must say one complaint I do not have with eBay is their explanation of their arbitrary rules and what are, for me, high fees for the supposed services they provide. Truth is, to me, not all eBays fault. They do not set the postal rate.
The pendulum has swung, online selling of items I am interested in are not conducive to sell here and are near impossible to buy here.
