...but that was June of 2016. I assume what we're talking about here is a new sighting...? (I suppose they could also have fired up their "test" again, though it seems to make no more sense now than it did in 2016...)

We spoke with CS, and a bug ticket was started. Here's what we're seeing: When using sell similar or the relist function for our listings (in Men's clothing categories), the Item Specifics portion is hidden from view. The problem is that even though it's hidden, when we list the item for sale, the info from the previous listing is used. That's a major issue. So, customers are seeing the incorrect/previous listing info on a NEW listing for a completely different item -- Brand, Country/Region of Manufacture, Material, Style, Fit... everything is incorrect. There is not a way to change the specifics either. In our experience, adding new item specifics only adds that info to the old item specifics info. It's a mess.
We ended the listing. It sounds like we'll have to wait it out until the problem is fixed. We're dead in the water until eBay corrects the issue.

It seams a to similar to me to waht happened a few years back, so my guess is that they are going to give the runa round again, but who knows

I'm not sure if this is also the problem being mentioned here, but currently on the weekly chat it was mentioned that some categories just changed (mens clothing was the example) and the item specifics were not being carried over.
Has anyone checked the original listing to see if the specifics are okay before doing sell similar?

The Item Specifics were just as they should be on the listings we were using for the sell similar option.
It does look like it's resolved now anyway. I noticed that Item Specifics area now has a portion to show if the item was "Modified".
My guess is that eBay was adding that to this category at the time we were attempting to list items. Hard to say though. Back at it, I guess. 🙂
