Sounds like the buyer opened a 'return' for 'not as described/damaged etc.) which you needed to refund as soon as you received them back. There is no stopping this type of return as buyers are given a 30 Day Guarantee which overrides any 'no returns' (except buyer remorse "I just didn't like it"). Since you did not process the refund, Ebay did it for you and it does count against you as they had to do it.
