Returned package with bad address. Customer expects me to re-ship it for free?

"Sorry I forgot to include the unit number."

"Please re-ship it to this address..."

When I informed him he'll need to pay for shipping again, he doesn't understand why.

Does this really need to be explained?

Maybe I should just refund him (less shipping) and be done with it.

What would you do?

I would refund less shipping and be done.
To me it sounds like a problem waiting to happen. Especially since the buyer has a problem understanding why he needs to pay to re-ship.

How would he go about paying for you to re-ship?

Because the postage has already been used duh!  Because YOU made the mistake not me duh!

Could you just cancel the transaction (problem with address), relist, and then they would have to purchase again?  Except that would refund the postage.  I offer free shipping, so that is what I would do, but if you don't offer free shipping, that wouldn't work for you.  YES they have to pay postage again!

People learn manners, courtesy and empathy as children. They completely forget all of that when they become eBay buyers.

In the past, I have just refunded the full customer payment and added the buyers to my BBL.

One of the costs of selling tens of thousands of merchandise yearly on eBay is a loss of a couple hundred dollars of postage for buyer stupidity. At least I can relist the merchandise.

@inhawaii

Ugh.

1.  Add Buyer to your BBL.  Once a macaroon, always a macaroon.

2.  Report Buyer - let e-Bay know this Buyer was not compliant as regards their shipping address, resulting in non-delivery for their item.

3,  Refund Buyer MINUS shipping.  If you offered FREE shipping, refund Buyer in full.

4.  Find snacks.  Sit down and enjoy the snacks while you relist your item on e-Bay and await the next macaroon.  Repeat SNAX as needed!

I think I would explain how to update their address so a new label prints correctly.

Then I would say I am refunding them and they need to buy again so I can get an updated label.

I would probably throw in there that as a seller you must ship to the address ebay supplies you and only that address.

They probably won’t buy it again but it solves your problem.

This, but I would also send buyer a link to the address management page and advise them to update before their next purchase.

I explain it to them & tell them how to pay me to re-ship.  I just tell them that the USPS charges me to re-ship, so I have to charge them.   All but 1 has paid, I charge them via PP.  If I had to refund, I'd withhold fees.

It's an amateur tactic - they figure if they just command you to reship, you'll do it, a sort of sleight of hand like kicking the dirty underwear under the couch when company comes over.

Well, try your best to explain it to them, their mistake is why the item was not delivered, its not your fault the package was returned, a buyers address mistake is their responsibility and they need to pay shipping again after making sure their ebay address info is updated correctly.  If they don'twant to pay again they can ask to cancel the order and they can be refunded for the item cost, not the shipping.

UPDATE:

I came to an agreement with the buyer. I will refund him (less shipping) for the first order. Then he will just make another purchase, this time with the correct address. Sounds good!

Except since there is a INR case opened I am unable to issue a partial refund.  It's all or nothing.

So i explained this to the buyer and asked him to close his INR case. Hopefully after the case is closed I will then be able to issue a partial refund.

Well, now that they decided to go above and beyond, they will lose the case and now their money.

How/why did they go above and beyond?

How/why will they lose their money?

I am 80, averse to aggravation and devoid of the slightest need for money; I would do as DIVA suggests. Were, though, I 40 with obligations, the solution FANCY FOX stated seems reasonable.
