a conversation in a group I'm in (selling online in general...many venues) I had this response and thought I would share it here too:
the biggest gap in shopping at crappy mainstream malls and (mass produced) stores in person vs second hand shopping online is the whole return mentality. it's up to the venues to instill in the buyers that >> you buy it you own it. period. << this whole return thing is taxing on everyone and it needs to be crystal clear: ASK Questions PRIOR to purchase with the understanding that once you buy it that's it. it would save a billion dollars in our world to just put an end to frivolous returns. I would rather they/them/whoever NOT buy in the first place because that mentality (especially "hmm I can always return it" mentality) is wasteful and stressful on us and they system

"is it really too much to ask people to be thoughtful and conscientious when buying an item online? or at very very least accept some of the responsibility"
In our entitled world today? Are we dreaming here? Accept responsibility? C'mon man, be serious.

@lakefor94 haha but wow. c'mon man...so now it's all about assuming everyone is entitled and horrible - is that what we have to live by these days? gross and sad and depressing if so.
if it's "dreaming" to expect more/better of other humans then I'm very afraid for our world.

You're preaching to the choir, unfortunately the higher ups have decided that all sales increase their bottom line FIGURES (meaning even if it's returned it still counts as a sale) which is considered "important" to stock holders and to them that is all that matters. To them it's all about the price of ebay stock shares, all they care about, also the fact that the seller carries all of the cost makes this a super attractive option for them.

Spot on! ebay allows buyers to use and abuse this platform as a 30 day free rental service at the expense of their sellers.
Mercari did away with this crap by putting forth a 3 day return policy. Even major retailers have reached a breaking point with the constant flow of freeloaders wanting to return everything they used for months on end. Amazon too has cracked down on such buyers by straight up banning them from the platform altogether.
I've lost count as to how many buyers I've had on ebay that returned games weeks after they bought them and played them all the way through.

@broto_64 "even if it's returned it still counts as a sale"...this is exactly the kind of **bleep** that makes life a nightmare for so many people. the "illusion" of wealth and prosperity as an excuse to stomp down ordinary people = disgusting & inexcusable.
I sigh so much as I type because I know I'm a teensy tiny voice that's muted by the big fat cats...but I just wanted to say something about all this - try to open up a (another!) conversation about how wasteful and stressful it all is.
thanks for responding.

@gamersbaystore Yes! I KNOW I'm not alone in this (=understanding the problem with allowing returns for any reason & allowing buyers to return at their leisure or not return and get money back)
and I'm seeing a growing awareness on many sites ( like you mention)
Returns are wasteful. Plus allowing anyone to return anything for any reason is begging for scams.
>>>giving anyone (on any side of any relationship) an upper hand BEGS for abuse of that power.

Was stating the facts of online selling on any venue using a payment processor. Buyers have no responsibility other than timelines. Even then, they get up to 6 months or even longer to come back and get you thru their Credit Card issuer.
As I said before, what you are looking for is on CL and FMP. Nothing is going to change here. If anything, it will certainly get more buyer centric as time moves on. Sellers are a less than a nickel for 10 dozen.

@lakefor94 ok. thanks for all that ✔️
I'm just glad there are still people in our world who hope/want/work for a better world & not settle for the worst.

Only on ebay. Mercari doesnt tolerate chargebacks. You open a chargeback there, you are banned from the platform for life. ebay tolerates this abuse, other platforms do not.

No platforms using a payment processor are immune to chargebacks. None of them. I get them on Amazon now and then. Win about 50%.
Mercari is irrelevant in the online sales game.

No problem, enjoyed the convo. Best to you this day.

INAD where the buyer has to show it's not as described would solve around 95% of the garbage returns for buyer's remorse.

Charge back for nonreceipt. Solves your problem.

That's great for high value items, but for items priced near the shipping cost it is a nonstarter.

I have yet to see a CC company that simply returns money. Every one I've ever dealt with you have to prove you didn't receive or photos of damage and that an insurance claim wasn't filed.
