I've sold a candy that was quite popular.

I sold 400+ of them.

I just found out they have been discontinued.

Will ebay let me keep the same item number and let me change the product to a similar product?

 I would be changing the title, the pictures , the description; etc.

Yes eBay will allow the change.

If it is cached in Google, it may take a while to update there, so buyers may see your old ad and it takes them to the new one. But they may have been searching for the previous product.

eBay says this for a Fixed Price listing with previous sales:

Note that it says "add" to description rather than "edit" description but I'm sure at some point I must have edited a description but I usually find mistakes before there has been a sale. If the current description refers to a specific product that would be a problem if you can't change the existing one.

Why would you do that? Start a new listing and it may gain popularity. t might cause you a headache if I clicked on the old title and got the new products, my advice, end item if it's discontinued, start a new item.

So the goal here would be to fool buyers into thinking you sold a large number of these candies when in fact you hadn't sold any in the hopes potential buyers would come to the conclusion that if so many others found it appealing they may also?

I don't understand why you wouldn't just make a new listing for the new/replacement/different item.

There are helpful websites that let you put in Amazon urls and they will tell you if the seller has been Shady and switching out products to steal reviews from a different product.

Yes, you can indeed revise the existing description of a Fixed Price multi-quantity listing even after one or more sales have occurred. You can also throw out any or all photos and add new ones.

I think that eBay verbiage above must have been copied from a similar bullet list for auctions, because after bids have been received in an auction, the existing description (and most of the rest) is locked in; you can only add further content below the existing text.

Because that beautiful sales history means a lot in the search results.  It is a big deal, especially 400 previous sales.

If it is not the same product, isn't that a form of search manipulation?  

Also, if there are any reviews of the previous product, they may not be accurate for the new product.

To me, that seems unethical.

And since eBay is not terribly concerned about ethics, you might be able to pull it off.

That is what I was thinking. Changing title, brand, and pictures, but wants it to show that they sold 400+ when they have not sold any yet.
