I got an order.
I didn't have it in stock.
Did NOT want another "Not in Stock" ding (too many on the books now).
I found the part in another store, ordered and paid for it to be drop-shipped.
Went to my list and tried to put the tracking number that the drop-shipper gave me in the system and I got a notice that "another user is using this number" and said no.
So, I just checked that "Item shipped".
But, it looks like I got a late ship ding because of no number entered.
Now, given a choice, I'll take a late ship over a not in stock any day ... fair trade in my mind.
But, how can I keep that from happening. Or can I?

It should be obvious why eBay would not allow a seller to "hijack" a tracking number that is being used by another seller.
But, how can I keep that from happening.
Well the simple answer is to address the root cause of your problem - stop selling item you do not have in stock.
This happens about once a month
Why does this happen to you so often?

If I’m hearing your analogy correctly here, are you saying that @biggymoe ’s comment was rude?
If so, despite many stating that in these boards sellers often get picked on harshly by the replies, his reply is far from that. Was it nice? Of course not. Was it rude? Of course not. His reply was the simplest form of straightforward constructive criticism without any fluff. True and to the point. You also see many others pretty much saying the same reply. And I don’t think any of them deserve a slap in the face (at least not for their reply).
You were already smart enough to know how to avoid that OOS defect. I personally think it’s actually harder to avoid a late shipping ding in your scenario than it is to avoid overselling something you just don’t have or can’t find. Take it as what you will.

I am at 1.25% -- I understand the limit is 2%.
That’s one and a quarter feet in the grave then.

I told a boss once, "Hey, I'm doing the best I can."
He nodded slowly and said, "Yea, that's what I'm afraid of."
Honestly I think this thought is the same reason why eBay would ban a seller if they had too many OOS defects. They fear the banned seller will not improve.
I believe the #1 complaint buyers and potential eBay buyers have about eBay is that sellers don’t ship out what was ordered.
