Hi I just sold my 1st item 2 days ago and it automatically defaulted to UPS, which was way more expensive than USPS. Why did this happen? Do I need to change my settings?

'Media Mail' is for books to ship....not clothing.

You're going to have to go into all your listings and change out your shipping option from media mail like 12345jamesstamps said. That's going to get your packages seized by the post office and ruin your account quickly. you should be thankful ebay caught this issue for you. although I would assume usps ground advantage would probably be a better option.

what the ebay bulk shipping defaults to is unstable just like most of the rest of ebays code. If in doubt look at the shipping options that are in he listing.

It has not done it in a while but several times in the past I hit print on bulk shipping without checking every one and would have one or two be media mail and I NEVER! have media mail as a option.

It defaulted to UPS because the listing had UPS Ground Saver as the only shipping option.

Have a great day.

It happened because the listing was set up to offer a UPS service.  If you want to ship via USPS, then set up your listings with a USPS service (but not Media Mail if your item is not eligible).

Just take a little more care when you are creating a listing and look at the details.  They are all important.

As stated by other posters, you have some listings set up to ship USPS Media Mail and what you are selling does NOT qualify to ship via that method.  You need to fix that right away.  Not only do most buyers know that, they will also know you are charging TOO MUCH for Media Mail.  It may be causing you to lose sales.  It is in your best interest to correct these listings ASAP.

ALL of your listings are set up for USPS Media Mail -- but NONE of your items qualify for that service.

Clothing -- boots -- shoes -- toys -- electronic devices.

NONE of those items qualify for USPS Media Mail.

USPS has begun to clamp down heavily on sellers who abuse the Media regulations -- so be prepared for items being returned to you marked "Insufficient Postage."

And the same thing may happen to your buyers -- they probably will not be happy to receive packages from USPS marked "Postage Due."

You need to revise the shipping conditions to ALL your items, to at least USPS Ground Advantage, which may cost more than the shipping charges which you currently have listed.

Here's the official USPS Regulations regarding Media shipping --

MEDIA MAIL SERVICE

Media Mail shipping is a cost-effective way to send educational materials. This service has restrictions on the type of media that can be shipped. Media Mail rates are limited to the items listed below:

  • Books (at least 8 pages).
  • Sound recordings and video recordings, such as CDs and DVDs.
  • Play scripts and manuscripts for books, periodicals, and music.
  • Printed music.
  • Computer-readable media containing prerecorded information and guides or scripts prepared solely for use with such media.
  • Sixteen millimeter or narrower width films.
  • Printed objective test materials and their accessories.
  • Printed educational reference charts.
  • Loose-leaf pages and their binders consisting of medical information for distribution to doctors, hospitals, medical schools, and medical students.

Media Mail packages may not contain advertising. Comic books do not meet this standard. Books may contain incidental announcements of other books and sound recordings may contain incidental announcements of other sound recordings. In accordance with standards in the Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, Domestic Mail Manual (DMM), Section 170, Media Mail packages must have a delivery address and the sender’s return address and are subject to inspection by the Postal Service™. Upon such inspection, matter not eligible for the Media Mail rate may be assessed at the proper price and sent to the recipient postage due, or the sender may be contacted for additional postage.

Yes, you need to change your settings.

Figure out how (best way) you want to ship the item.

Figure out what it will cost ship your item that way.

Figure out what you want to charge the customer.

Set up your listring accordingly.

Your items not only have media mail shipping, but all have the same shipping cost too. Your Beanie Babies will cost much less to ship than pairs of boots. Some of your items are heavy enough you may lose a fair bit of money on shipping at the 7.95 price point.

You should go back, put Ground Advantage shipping on your items, and use calculated shipping by weight, especially on the boots and coats/jackets.

What?  There are the shipping fields on the Listing Form for you to fill out.  Not everything you sell is the same weight.  So your shipping prices, when done correctly, will vary.

In this case I would suggest changing the one by one because the shipping weight will vary so that makes the shipping cost vary.  You should be shipping USPS Ground Advantage.  Unless you want to use Priority mail.

Just take your time, there is a shipping section on your listing details / listing form.  Just click on the REVISE button on the listing, upper left side.  Take your time and review your form and the info slowly.  Don't assume you know something.  Look at everything.
