Payment default rate now running at 40%

Incredible number of dead-beats lately. Ebay's lame non-payment strike doesn't mean anything to these people. Auctions in any other venue require a means test, to determine if you have the funds or inclination to pay. You go to an auction, you put up $50-$500 upfront. If you buy something, you pay, you get your deposit back. You bid on something and don't pay, they take what they can from what you put down as a deposit.

Re: Payment default rate now running at 40%

Obviously that cannot be done here.  If ebay tried to implement that most bnuyers would never make another purchase here.

But you can protect yourself.  While with auctions you cannot do IMR, you can however set your blocks for those with 2 or more unpaid strikes.

@rander3127  What in the world are you selling that people are bidding on but not paying? UPIs are a rare thing ...

Just wondering if buyers are doing a double take on those shipping charges.  Seller is in Canada so wonder if US buyers are changing their minds and buying US instead.

Not really. Scientific equipment, electronics (non-consumer), some camera stuff, lab equipment. Scummy buyers feel no compunction about reneging, never say sorry, never ask to cancel an order so you can offer it to the second bidder faster. I partially blame struggling U.S. retail for putting in desperation policies like 2-3 month return abilities, which is ridiculous. There is no onus on buyers to fulfill any obligations.

Re: Payment default rate now running at 40%

Shipping charges are all over the place. Most U.S. sellers don't know how to obtain the best shipping prices and charge too much anyway. But the whole point is, shipping charges for Americans are right in their FACE in the listings. They are just too stupid/lazy to look before bidding/buying.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

If your category has such an insanely high rate of nonpayment you should sell everything Fixed Price with Immediate Payment Required and protect yourself.

If you have such a low opinion of Americans, then block USA sales. Your vitriol is unwarranted.

I wonder if they might be able to address that with the new system?  Not for all buyers, but maybe for those who have shown to be problems.  Maybe even temporary as a form of buyer restriction probation.

So that is your excuse for charging these high shipping prices.  That you cannot find the best shipping prices either.

But why the need to wait for that when sellers can just list fixed price immediate payment required.

Re: Payment default rate now running at 40%

That's one of the reasons why I stopped doing auctions years ago and just put immediate payment required on all of my listings. I didn't have time chasing buyers down for payment. Now I just get alot of buyers filing cancellation requests, haha.

Is there some barrier to entry for you there or...?

it's worth the risk.  win some you lose some.  if you're listing auctions, you're willing to lose some.
