Paying without consent.

Recently made an offer on item and next thing I know, item being shipped. Ebay paid   through paypal without my knowledge.  Wasn't ready to pay yet and they wouldn't let me cancel saying it had been shipped. Knew better because i seen it at 6:00 AM next day. Seller was good enough to refund. He thought it was a  weird deal too.  Whats up with that? Second time its happened.

@dave17a

This is how it is set up now, if you accept an offer an immediate payment is made. Reason being that so many people who make offers, don't pay.  Sellers get tired of chasing their money due to buyers changing their minds or simply don't pay because they're being difficult and screwing with the seller for the fun of it.  A lot of sellers have it set up like this for these reasons. If you accept an offer, you're expected to pay for it asap.  In the future you may want to steer clear of best offers if you don't like this feature. Hope this is helpful.

Have a great day.

I recently accepted an offer and it said right on the page that if I accepted, payment would immediately be taken.   It's going to differ by seller so just be careful.

For example, I don't require immediate payment on anything so it would never take the automatic payment.

Whenever I go to make an offer now, the system verifies which payment source I am going to use before I make the offer. Then I can submit the offer.

If the offer is accepted, it is automatically paid for.

As others have mentioned, this is an option some sellers have set. Or more correctly, an option that some sellers did not opt out of as it was turned on for everyone by default. This particular seller may not have realized it was turned on. Or, maybe they knew it was active, but thought it easier to just refund. If that is the case, they may well have blocked you from future purchases from them.
Unfortunately, some sellers will insist on immediate payment. Your recourse is to purchase from a different seller.

Just for clarification.....you did give your consent...

prior to submitting, it is pretty clearly spelled out you are authorizing an immediate payment on the pop-up page prior to submitting your offer. Easily missed if you don't take a second to read it.

(unless for some technical reason you your transaction did not).....

Did you want the item or not?  Why even make an offer if you are unsure?  It sounds like you were unsure.  Don't waste sellers' time if you don't intend on following through.  Please don't turn eBay into Marketplace; where 95% of the 'buyers' just waste people's time.

If you made an offer, you should have had a pop up to confirm your payment method.

Some sellers set their listings for 'immediate payment required' to fight back on the non-payers.

This process has positive and negative effects.

1. The seller and eBay get their money quick.

2. This type of format can also push buyers away. Buyers have 4 days to pay.

3. Some shoppers can lose track on the amount of offers they made and could suddenly see this themselves in debt or maybe even insufficient funds charges.

I get older buyers are not adjusted to the more recent changes and you didn't pay attention to what you agreed to.

That can be annoying, HOWEVER, you did AGREE to pay.

Please don't send offers unless you are serious about the offer.

Your seller obviously hasn't stayed up to date to the changes if they issued a refund.

@dave17a

How recent was this?  I ask because eBay is changing the "make offer" system once again.  Previously, if you had to "choose a payment option" in order to proceed to make that offer, it resulted in the  auto-billing process you describe for those sellers that retained the Buyer Payment Requirements that eBay placed on their accounts with a default YES.  Sellers could un-enroll in that process.

The procedure outlined in the latest seller update is different and reflective of the "intended change, enhancement, test, experience, etc. that behaves like a glitch" that has been going on the past few weeks. The latest indicates sellers can not opt out of the newest program at all, and is not dependent on the same Buyer Payment Requirement that remains.

Unless you were hoping to buy more than one item from this seller with combined shipping, I guess I don't understand the problem with the payment being made.  The quickness was troubling for what reason?

It's the principal man. Not wasting anybody's time. Pay when I'm ready not on anybody elses terms.  Luckily he is a car tractor guy. Most others are greedy.

You "pay when you're ready?"  How about trying you, "make an offer when you're ready to pay?"

It's the principle, man.  The principal man is the guy everybody hated in grade school.
