Re: PROTECTING SELLERS FROM ABUSIVE BUYER PER EBAY OPEN***NOT HAPPENING!!!

And this is surprising... in what way?

As with every other seller "protection" protestation by eBay- there's always  an "out" for eBay. In this case, it's eBay deciding what is "abuse" and what isn't. My guess is that it only qualifies as "abuse" when one of these "buyers" costs eBay  money.

Chaos is NOT an "industry standard".

You are misinterpreting what I posted to another poster.  She said since Amazon instituted this policy a while back it should have been no surprise to ebay buyers.  What I said is that many who shop here never shopped there so it was a complete surprise when it was instituted here.

Yes I know it is based on where I live, so why am I being charged a tax on clothes when there isn't one in my home state?  Why was I charged 10% on a purchase from New York when my home state tax is much lower?

I read somewhere that if the seller lists certain apparel in a non-clothing category you have to pay sales taxes as the tax bot in checkout calculates it as a taxable item.

Some have never shopped on Amazon so when ebay instituted the tax (yes I know it is not their fault) it did catch a lot of buyers off guard, especially when it was a gradual phase in.  I now check the list and try to stick with States where it has not happened yet, or buy locally.

Even if they never went to Amazon, if they bought from walmart, target, or a host of other stores/shops online they would have been charges sales tax.

If the item was used, then yes, people do get upset, seeing as that same item might have been taxed 5 or 6 times already - including when it was bought new. That's the kicker - similar(but not the same as) the double taxation when buying alcohol or cigarettes, since you are paying sales tax on taxes already paid.

Customer wanted a lower price up front.  I gave a $10 discount/wanted more money off when they had to pay sales tax/wanted $15 or they were going to leave negative feedback/created a return but only wanted $15 off and to keep item.  Ebay told me to either give them the $15 or take the item back and credit them for the item and shipping both ways.  This was a perfect handmade item from the 70's the motivation was to get $$$ out of me from the beginning and they were completely supported in this by EBAY...SO WRONG

Hi @monjon552016, the specific protections announced at eBay Open for Top Rated Sellers go into effect in October. That being said, I encourage you to review the buyer's message they sent when opening the return request as it details the reason they feel this item was not described accurately. In cases where a buyer is letting you know what they received does not match the description, you will need to accept the return and pay for return shipping if you and the buyer cannot work out an alternative solution.

Hi @kataggr-44, tax exclusions are calculated by category, and the tax rate assessed is based on your location. We look to the zip code to determine the precise rate you need to be charged, and if you do not have the full 9 digit zip in your shipping address, we may not be able to assess the exact rate for your location. If you are charged a higher rate than you feel is appropriate, try changing your zip code to include the full 9 digit zip. You can also pursue any necessary credits for taxes that you paid for items that are not taxed in your state by contacting the appropriate local entity.

As a side note, we are working on a way of identifying the full zip code location of the shipping address on our own, but until this is implemented you may need to add this information yourself.

Thank you @Anonymous.  I just looked at my mail so I now have that information and will update it on ebay.
