Offensive material policy- how to relist?

Hello-

Last night, I listed three different copies of the Dr. Seuss book "And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street". In each listing, I showed the front and back cover, spine, publication page, title page and one page from the book showing artwork that was the cause of the book being banned. This last part was my bad, since I did not think about how that looked in a listing and I wish I would not have put it in. The illustration in question has not aged well and is culturally insensitive.

However, I got 4 emails from eBay saying they have ended all three listings because of "offensive material"- that one page which I showed in my photos of the book. I also got this in one of the emails: "Dr. Seuss Enterprises has stopped publication of this book due to its negative portrayal of some ethnicities. As a courtesy, we have ended your item and refunded your selling fees, and as long as you do not relist the item, there will be no negative impact to your account. Please review our Offensive Materials Policy prohibits this item for more information."

I understand that part of the book is offensive, and I can understand why Seuss Enterprises pulled the book. However, when I went onto eBay today, I found at least 3 dozen listing of the book that were still gathering bids and views. Apparently the Seuss estate did not take those ones down.

My question is this- I was just trying to sell this book because it is now out of print and is very rare. I understand that there is a page with a slightly offensive illustration on it, and I agree that posting a picture of that page was a bad decision- however, every other edition being sold has it as well. Is the reason that mine was taken down because I included a photo of it on my listing, and would it have stayed up had I removed the photo?

I am pretty sure I can't relist the item now, since they said "You can't relist items we've ended. Please ensure your current and future listings follow this policy." But once again, there are tons and tons of other listings that are still up for the exact same book (and the exact same EDITION, by the way). Is there anything I can do, or should I not try to relist the items in case something worse happens?

Once again, I want to reiterate that the only reason I was selling these books was because they are now rare and out of print. That one illustration on that one page was not in any way the focus of my sale. However, I do understand that illustration is offensive, so I completely understand why I was contacted.

Thank you!

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

There's nothing you can do to resolve this matter. Once eBay has removed any particular listing of any particular seller, the matter is over, and if any particular seller tries to relist that item, eBay will remove it again and possibly place further restrictions upon that seller, so trying to relist it would be a big mistake.

And as far as seeing other listings of the same item on eBay, that is irrelevant, listings violations are randomly caught, by eBay, the others are just lucky thus far.

Look at like this, there are many over the limit speeders on the highway, but not all of them get caught throughout the span of, day to day activities.

Good luck to you

The books have been deemed offensive......it's not your use of the picture........  They are gradually taking them down........ Do NOT relist or you may get a suspension...........

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

Simple answer: When ebay says do not relist, what ebay means---they've proven this many, many times---is Do. Not. Relist. Period.

So:

I am a book,

and I am rare,

But list me again,

you do not dare.

Don't worry about the other copies that are still up. Most likely they will eventually get taken down, whether they show the offensive illustration or not. Consider it a lesson learned, and move on.

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

ebay decided last  night that Dr. Seuss was deemed "offensive" and started to pull the listings.   Don't try to list them anymore since it is now a policy violation.  No telling what will be next.  Keep your eye on the media headlines for clues and stories of book burning events.

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

I'm sure "The Scarlet Letter", "Red Badge of Courage", "1984", and, eventually, the Bible, will all make it to the 'offensive' category. That why I have always been against digitalizing books. One click and it is gone, inaccessible, forever. Welcome to cancel culture.

They started removing the books yesterday, so the rest will be removed soon.

Have a great day.

I understand the random violation. I just wanted to see if there was a specific reason why mine was taken down. Thanks!

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

If you insist on re-listing those books after ebay ended them, your future on ebay will be short indeed.

Just because someone else didn't get caught doesn't absolve you from having to follow the rules.

Burn the books, Montag.

Next into the fire, Robinson Crusoe and that Nietzsche fellow.  Then the two devils George Washington and Thomas Jefferson will get tossed into the fire pit.

Online retailer eBay is removing several Dr. Seuss books from its website that are no longer being published.

A spokeswoman for the website told the Washington Examiner on Thursday that it would no longer be allowing sellers to list six books that have been deemed by Dr. Seuss Enterprises, the company that preserves Theodor Seuss "Ted" Geisel's legacy, as containing racially insensitive imagery.

Rush Limbaugh will soon go into the fire pit.

You'll still be free to sell your copies of Mien Kampf and anything by Karl Marx or Mao though.  They're safe.

Re: Offensive material policy- how to relist?

The COPYRIGHT OWNERS of the book have decided to stop publishing the book. This is self censorship, not an Orwellian nightmare. First sale doctrine protects the right to resell what has been purchased, but does not guarantee a platform to sell it on. The eBay platform has decided to avoid bad publicity by pulling them. Sellers can keep the book, or find another way to sell it. Nobody's first amendment rights are under attack.
