I went to contact one of my customers who had made a major purchase a couple of weeks ago. I put in a small gift with the items and she left glowing feedback for me.
I just wanted to say thanks again and tell her a little bit about the gift I sent her. I used one of her old emails to reply to. Well what do you think happened. Of course, it would not allow me to send the message, so I had to respond to her through the purchase record. Good grief!!!!!!! Don't they want sales??? Communication is how to get them. I'm fed up.
You are attempting to communicate about an invalid item.
We monitor messages sent through eBay for fraud, abuse, spam, and other violations of our policy.

i read such threads quite often on this board.
a few was enough for me.
i have told myself no more friendly conversation with users through ebay msgs.
not that i had a habit of doing so.
but would happen once in a while like in a similar situation as yours.
happened a few months ago.
the user then replied and sent her personal infos.
i never asked for them it was just a casual and friendly chat.
guessed i dodged the bullet.
users communicating through ebay msgs (beside business) are asking for trouble (not saying it is right but there has been way too many threads about it).
we have been warned and know the consequences.
OP...
if you feel you have to communicate with a buyer why don't you pull the email address from the PP payment?

That is exactly what is happening.
Remember all those old science fiction stories, where the population was told the robots were created to HELP them, and would never do anything to cause harm..... (Then the robots started to wipe out the humans. lol)

From a buyer perspective though, I can buy 200 items in a month. Do I want all those sellers sending me emails even if some would consider it good customer service? Maybe if they sold items I buy for inventory but I really don't care to know that someone just listed another LL Bean flannel shirt or remembered a fun story that happened last time their loved one wore the shirt.
I like the idea of putting your business card in the envelope and if the buyer wants to continue a relationship then they can. Otherwise some might object to follow on emails. As far as business goes, unless they have signed up for future updates, additional emails might be considered SPAM.

Completely agree about being contacted by sellers after my purchase has been made. The worst offenders for me.. sending basically junk into my email boxes.. are Amazon and EBAY. Not individual sellers, nor do I send my buyers emails in solicitation either.

Are you making sales, or trying to get life long penpals?
Having went back to your past threads, I have to wonder if its not the latter. If so, you need to decide whats more important, friends, or cash

Why use one of her *old emails*?
How did you even have that info?
I use the buyer current info and have had no problems at all.:)

Technically, she wasn't using an old email; she was using an old eBay message, but the referenced item linked to the message was too old, so the message was rejected.
All she needs to do is go to the PayPal transaction instead, where the buyer's actual email address is given, and use that instead for a genuine email rather than an eBay message.
All that aside, it would be preferable to just drop a business card and/or a note in the package instead, with the relevant info about the item, and leave it up to the buyer to make a later contact if they like.

Im not sure is as much about the bots as it is the OPs overwhelming need to communicate.
Now back in the day before I left (and forgot my original posting id lol), I made a ton of life long friends here on the boards, where its MUCH safer to communicate and share personal info via messages.
I didnt mean to come off so harsh towards the OP, it just seems like she tries too hard to make her buyers her friends, which in the old days we could totally do, but with the new ebay, its just safer to make friends here and on the facebook ebay groups.

True Lady,
The problem is once you know the bots are there ya need to find a different dance floor if you don't like them "cutting in"!

You have the actual email address of any buyer that paid by PayPal, and that may be your best avenue of communication, that being completely outside of the eBay realm.
If one really stops to think about it, WHY would one think that avenue is 'completely outside of the ebay realm'?
