NEW pkg pickup scanning rules from the USPS

In the last 2 days, I remember seeing a post on here about NEW rules for scanning pkgs at pickup.  IIRC, that poster was from the STL area.  They said their carrier had told them about a meeting (which I took to be a regional thing), that now limits the number of pkgs they can scan to 5.   You must print a SCAN sheet for >5 & you can't add the next morning's pkgs b/c they won't be on the scan sheet.

Well, I am in CO, nowhere near STL & I text with my carrier & this AM he texted me the exact same thing, so apparently this is a new rule that they are implementing, not just in St. Louis 😞

The only thing my carrier said different than the other post is that he may be able to pick up the new pkgs for the next day, as a separate transaction.   My carrier is great & doesn't mind pkg pick up, so this is coming down from above 😐

I use Ebay shipping.  Does anyone know if you can still print a scan sheet & how?   Do I have to do MOS?  (which I hate).

Just a heads up for everyone.  I wonder why we haven't heard anything about this from Nate Heyward's team?

ATTN Mods:  Please don't move to the SHipping board, as this affects MANY sellers & is not a shipping problem per se.

Re: NEW pkg pickup scanning rules from the USPS

I mentioned this to one of the clerks at my PO.  He said he'd look into it - he tries to keep up with what's current.  (I think maybe some day he'd like to be a postmaster)  He expects it will not affect the rural carriers at this particular PO because they've been scanning at pickup for years and don't like change.

This particular PO likes on-line sellers and is happy to scan you packages, just don't bring in 100  in the 30 minutes before closing.  If you just drop them off early enough, they will give them an acceptance scan.

They have historically (20 years for me as a customer) had a customer-service mind-set.

It likely WILL affect them, whether they like change or not b/c it has been programmed (or will be) into their scanners!  It's a software update.   Mine have been scanning for years also, though mine is not a rural route & it didn't stop his scanner from getting the update!

Hi @simply-the-best-for-you I went ahead and got this in the right hands, if I get any more details I'll be sure to reach out and let you know. Thanks!

Hey Jasmen, there are now 3 or 4 threads on this, as it is hitting around the country now.  Can we get an update from Nate's team?  Or if Nate isn't the shipping guy anymore, whoever is?   This is becoming a nationwide issue, as all the posts are from different parts of the US & I know Nate's team works on preventing USPS impediments to Ebay sellers.

For an update, I spoke to my carrier this AM & I found out a few things.   As I already mentioned, this is SOFTWARE on their scanner.  It physically won't let them scan more than 5 items (he showed me).  He also showed me that right now, he has a workaround, BUT it goes live on the 26th & at that time, he predicts the workaround may go away, as there's no need for a redundant system.

I also learned that it is rural routes this affects & this is part of like a survey they do of their routes, which was already delayed by 2 years due to COVID.  It is currently scheduled to go into effect on 3/26, but he cautioned me that stuff changes all the time.

I was STUNNED to learn that my route is a rural route, b/c it's anything but rural!  It hasn't been rural for over 20+ years.  I live in a new subdivision of 1000 homes, surrounded by subdivisions, in a city of around 750K people.   There is absolutely nothing rural about my area, but apparently it is considered a rural route.  So, for Ebay's purposes, this doesn't just affect those living out in the country, it also affects those in the heart of suburbia.

So hopefully Nate can work his magic with the powers-that-be at the USPS to prevent more USPS impediments to getting an Acceptance scan?   Also, maybe there's something in the works to be able to print a scan sheet without having to use Bulk Labels?  It's clunky, clumsy, ugly & I don't want to print all my labels at once.   Apparently that's a common sentiment, as indicated in the other thread.

I'm sorry to be a pain, but this is a huge national USPS change, that is going to affect all millions of sellers & it's been over a week since I posted & asked if you could check with Nate or whoever is now in charge of the Shipping these days, as they have a direct line to USPS in Washington, when they decide to implement these changes with no notice.   Have you still not heard anything from Nate's team or maybe it's not Nate anymore, whoever IS in charge of that dept now?

If not, I'll just contact Ina Steiner, as I know she has resources within Ebay too (& the USPS).  I would think after over a week, you'd have heard something about a nation-wide change to Acceptance Scan processes that will affect millions of your users.

Re: NEW pkg pickup scanning rules from the USPS

Hi @simply-the-best-for-you I was able to push for some more info today, so sorry for the delay on this.

"USPS has indicated that there is not a new policy and we have been told in rural areas it is up to the discretion of the carrier.  We’ll keep you updated with any additional information that we receive."

Thanks!

Well, thanks for the info I guess Jasmen.  Unfortunately, shippers are being told it IS a new policy 😞  & since it's a NEW software change to their scanners, what you're being told is clearly untrue 😞  It's called the H scan is my understanding & that's the new way of doing it on the scanners.   I guess I'll contact Ina anyway, but thank you for getting back to us.  I do appreciate it!

ETA:  I should add, my carrier showed it to me & we tested it together.  It will not let him scan more than 5, where he's always been able to in the past.
