Five day old listings, Ebay tells me to lower my price because of "underperforming".
According to their analysis they have NO sales to compare it to, but yet it's underperforming.
(They also say the 25 day old sales are underperforming, no sales for those either)
Tell me Ebay, how do you assess price and underperformance with no sales data?

Their superior statistical software and their crystal ball?

eBay note: This listing hasn't had any sales in the last 16 months. Please consider revising it.
I have a few of these. Sometimes i adjust (lower) the price. Sometimes i don't. Depends on the item/circumstance.

I think that's the same thing they use to determine who our "peers" are when comparing our seller metrics.

I know five day listings doesn't seem like much of a duration to base that message on, but eBay wants fast conversions, quick sales. This year it has been all about sales velocity~how quickly things sell. They want quick turn over.
The fact that there has been no sale(s) means it is underperforming. You list with the goal of a sale, and that is eBay's goal, too; but that has not happened. The sales data is the fact that it hasn't sold.

IOW, when an item sells, that is performing. That is what you and Ebay want.
When an item doesn't sell, that is underperforming. That is not what you or Ebay want.

If ebay wasn`t underperforming, your listing wouldn`t be underperforming.

Yep, if it takes more than 5 minutes, it is under-performing. Gotta keep that velocity up to serious speeding ticket quality.

Precisely. It's just more eBay arrogant incompetence, based on the attitude of entitlement that underpins eBay's corporate culture.
Nothing can ever possibly be eBay's problem/ fault. It's the rest of the world and reality that drags eBay down.

Precisely! 😉

nope, they just throw the bones and interpret ... if that doesn't work they spill red ink on the floor and make chicken scratches in it, then blot it with TP, and interpret the blot?

what they are going to force many sellers to do with their 'new' search and gtc histories is: cancel all listings and then sell them all as similar to remove the tracking numbers and histories so that items will be seen again, maybe, depending on how 'promoted' the items are ...

But what about GTC? Those endlessly available items with great Google standings?
It hasn't escaped me that eBay's "analysis of underperforming listings" are being done WITHIN the 30 day marker on GTC listings. Isn't what they're suggesting exactly what most of us were doing anyway (and likely a better job of it) with shorter duration listings?

As with most of eBay's suggestions I pretty much ignored all of it. But this morning I find myself annoyed about it.
Does Ebay not think I carefully researched prices when I listed the item 5 days ago? Are they naïve enough to believe it isn't cross-listed on other sites. Much of the time, I give Ebay buyers a price advantage already.
Ah well. I'm off to package the book that I sold on Amazon last night.
