Buyer purchased an item and selected local pick up. He emailed that his wife was passing through town and wanted to pick item up. Said it was short notice and if it did not work out that was okay. I was at the hospital with my husband and was not available. I do not have a shipping address. Ebay says cancel the order, is this the only option and am I going to be punished for canceling an order?

Can you not contact the buyer and set a better time? Another option would be to invoice the buyer for the s&h charges and mail it. True, though, that you could cancel the first order and relist for the buyer to repurchase and NOT select Local Pickup.

What I would do is message the buyer and make arrangements for pick up. Try working out a time to meet up first. If the two of you are unable to reach an agreement on pick up time then cancel the order and sell it to someone else. Just make sure that your buyer has a mutual understanding you are cancelling the order.

If you want to avoid "defect" on your account for cancelling this order, you should get customer's shipping address and mail item to them (at your expense).

Since you state the buyer has paid for the item, you wouldnt be able to reinvoice them to cover shipping. There isnt a handling time for local pickups, so if you and the buyer can agree on a new date/time to meet up I would first recommend trying that. But I would also include in that message, if they cant meet up again would the buyer want to have the order canceled & refund. This way it would give you the option to cancel the order with the reason "Buyer asked to cancel" and wouldnt affect your account.
