Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

I was wondering when a Buyer purchases an item set for Local Pick Up only are they able to see the full address once they "purchase" the item?

Also, my understanding is we have to have PayPal set to accept but can request cash at pick up but there is nothing prventing Buyer from using PayPal ... so how does the PayPal part get turned off or is there another non-account strike generating way to cancel the PayPal portion then take cash at pick up?

Re: Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

Dunno if this has changed in the past year or two, maybe longer.

If the buyer selects "local pickup" at checkout, he doesn't see a shipping amount.  However, he can still login to PayPal and "pay for auction goods" with the eBay listing number.

If he selects "shipped" at checkout, he can pay through PayPal and will pay for s/h.

eBay prevents a listing from going live without having one form of electronic payment, I assume, becasue that's the process for eBay to get fvf...maybe?

Re: Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

No, the address has to be sent buy the seller after purchase. many sellers have pick up addresses different from account addresses.

If cash is accepted then the item remains as unpaid until the cash is received at pick up and the seller then marks it as payment received.

If payment is made through PayPal then payment is received in advance of pick up.

When listing a pick up only listing you can require payment at pick up which excludes PayPal

When listing a pick up our delivery option (which is how our listings work) then PayPal is an option

The rules vary for some categories

Re: Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

I've never had a listing where it is pickup only.

I have had someone pay with Paypal for a local pickup.

Instantly refunded and told buyer I accept cash only on pickup.

I even state that in my listings!

Cash on Pickup

...

That has not been possible for years. I remember that it used to be possible, but when eBay changed their Checkout process, maybe 2 or 3 updates ago, it became impossible. It might have been when they disallowed third-party checkouts, and required all transactions to go through eBay checkout.

If you tried to pay for an eBay item directly from PayPal as you described, it would redirect you to the eBay Checkout page to pay.

Yes, you are required to include an electronic payment option.

Ideally, if a buyer is going to purchase a LPU item they will contact you before purchase. When that happens you can discuss cash on pickup and not to use PayPal.

If a buyer purchases without discussing first, there is a greater chance they'll go ahead and pay with PayPal right away.

If this happens I would initiate communication with the buyer regarding the pick-up and see if they would be willing to change their payment method to cash.

If they agree then you can refund the buyer through PayPal and receive cash on pickup.

Here's one thing I'm not sure about, so maybe @Anonymous, @Anonymous, or tyler@ebay can confirm.

If it's a non-LPU item and you issue a FULL paypal refund and don't have tracking attached or an official cancellation through eBay, this will trigger a defect because eBay assumes that with the lack of tracking & delivery you're refunding due to OOS.

What I don't know is if you do a FULL paypal refund on a listing that is Local Pickup Only with no other shipping option, will that also trigger an OOS defect?

If the answer is no, then what is the defect policy if the listing is LPU but also has a shipping option - but the buyer chose LPU at checkout. If there's a full paypal refund because the buyer agreed to cash on pickup would a defect be triggered in that instance?

Hopefully one of the blues can advise on these questions.

If it does trigger a defect, but the buyer is good with cash on pickup, you can probably refund all but $1 through PayPal.

The alternative would be to have the buyer request cancellation and re-purchase but that seems like a lot of trouble. Hopefully there's no defect. If there is a defect (which really wouldn't make sense) then you can hold back $1 from your refund.

Re: Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

@*eponymous*, @copper.boom, @lacemaker3, @z50com, @rw011164

First and foremost, thanks for all the replies.  I will be able to create a word doc quick reference sheet from all the replies and boil it down.  I know I've tried to type in things like "cash at pick up" but eBay rejects those and the only thing they really allow me to do is something like "Contact Seller for methods of payment" ... which is rediculus.  The whole Local Pick up option is a bit cumbersome.

Now, to the one comment about the OOS strike, I know from personal  expereince that a tracked and delivered via shipping item can be fully refunded AFTER delivery confirmation without getting the OOS strike.  As for Refunding the Local Pick up in PayPal and then switching to cash at pick up (based on messaging with Buyer of course) ... not sure if the replies were that definitive on yes or no for the OOS strike.  maybe a good Weekly Chat question ...

So again, many thanks & have a good rest of the weekend.

No, I didn't miss that at all. It was why I responded to you.

Your post indicated that you weren't sure, but you thought that it was still possible to pay for an eBay purchase through PayPal. I thought you would appreciate knowing what the current situation is. Was I mistaken in that?

My understanding is that in this situation, you can choose "Problem with the buyer's shipping address" as the reason for the refund, and this does not result in a defect.

This seems reasonable, because you're not actually shipping the item, but I don't have any experience to back this up.

Hi Lacemaker. Yes, I know that if the buyer agrees to cash on pickup after sending an e-payment you can cancel due to problem with buyer's address or more accurately due to buyer request, but then you would have to relist and have the buyer re-purchase (without e-payment).

If not then you would just be canceling and taking the sale off-ebay. I don't want to advise this to the OP because if it looked like they were trying to avoid fees & take a sale off eBay they could jeopardize their account.

@copper.boom-- that's a good point.

This would be a good question for eBay staff at the Weekly Chat, I guess.

Let me check my selling account for the wording and see if that works - BRB

Re: Local Pick up Question - does Buyer see full address when they purchase?

Okay, I found this in my saved payment preferences:

"Contact me for payment methods to pay on pickup." - this was from eBay and their exact wording.  I have not listed anything recently for LPU, but placing this in the payment section when listing worked then, I do not know if it will work now.

I also remember that it asking for cash in the listing and/or description made my listing get rejected.   I hope this makes sense - coffee needs to kick in 😉

Makes perfect sense, it parrots what I previously posted, certain things that are written that are IMPORTANT to the deal get rejected.
