I'm not a new seller, I've been selling for a long time now and taken a hiatus. So not this company is asking me for my social or they're gonna hijack my money. Why didn't they inform me this BEFORE I listed the item on ebay. NONE of my online retailers or selling platform do I give my social, but this f*****g place want's my personal property to "protect me" what is this? These kinds of things are the reason I stopped selling through ebay and is the last time. NOT EVEN MY BANKS HAVE MY SOCIAL, these crooks shouldn't be keeping it either. I don't want my personal information in their database for their next hack and to increase their coffers for the private intellectual data as another weak but intrusive online company.

To pay you.
Do you want to get paid?
Why are you calling ebay "crooks".
What have they stole from you?

eBay is required to "know their customer" to comply with federal law.
SSAN of EIN is required to be paid

You must have taken a long hiatus. I empathize with those allowed to list before onboarding with Managed Payments, tho.

You're going to love it even more when Ebay holds your funds for up to thirty days because you havent sold anything recently.

Every platform I sell on requires my Social because, guess what, they deal in money.

@comicsun You have a lot of catching up to do.

Because they trust you to know all the eBay policies (as well as the laws) you agreed to when that first item is listed after your return from your hiatus.

They will, as the law has changed since you last sold here. It is the IRS and the federal government (not eBay) that requires selling venues to collect your social security number, as here-on-out your sales will be reported to the IRS via a 1099K each year, based on your sales amount made.
You must have been away from selling a long time to have missed this drastic change. The dollar thresholds for reporting income derived from online sales have been lowered from $20,000 in 2023 to $600 for 2026. For this year, the minimum threshold to report is $2500. See the link below for additional info.

By the way, you are aware of the new (or returning) seller funds holds too, right? See link below for more info:

eBay requires this from every seller.
Since you were not aware that eBay would need your SS number in order to pay you, I hope you are aware that the fees you will have to pay on what you sell are based on the amount of the sale, the shipping charge, and the sales tax that eBay collects and remits for you. This is all spelled out in the user agreement.

If you earn interest on a bank account, the bank needs your SS# since they have to report your interest to the IRS (form 1099-INT). So it sounds like perhaps you have non-interest bearing accounts.

Why didn't they inform me this BEFORE I listed the item on eBay?
eBay sent a message to seller's email accounts on 01/30/2018 announcing Managed Payments would be rolled out over a few year time frame.
I enrolled on September 24th, 2018 and did not have to pay the $0.30 swipe fees and the percentage fee was lower for 16 months. I am thankful that I was excluded from the relentless barrage of recruitment messages.
Chances are you don't remember submitting your SS# numerous times for car loans, apartment leases and previous employers.
You can avoid eBay's intrusive demand by refusing to give your SS# and then collect your net proceeds from your state's unclaimed funds agency in 180 days.

Ebay DID inform you. The question is why didn't you actually READ it BEFORE you listed your item?

2 questions i have from your post..
"...NOT EVEN MY BANKS HAVE MY SOCIAL..."
sorry, but a BANK is required to have a Taxpayer Identification Number of some sort (SSN, EIN)
"...NONE of my online retailers or selling platform do I give my social..."
I sell on 4 others, and all require my EIN...what are you selling on? Prairie Grit?

Online marketplaces have changed. Even payment services like PayPal have changed.
Money laundering is harder to do. Evading income tax is harder. Many laws are easier to enforce.
And quick cash is far less available.
