Item failed authenticated?

I am having a problem with eBay again regarding the selling.  The last time I shipped a ruby to the customer, he/she was having problems with the customs in the country where the item arrived, so they claimed the item hadn't been received.  eBay held my money and refunded it to the customer. In the meantime, I didn't get my ruby back.

This time, I sold a diamond ring made of solid 18-karat gold. It was also shipping internationally. Did it go to a place to be "authenticated"? This is the first time I've heard of it. Then eBay refunded the customer because it said the ring got authenticated, but it doesn't meet authentication based on various reasons: damaged packaging (I shipped with a USPS priority box). How could it get damaged? 2, "doesn't match the item listing."  I thought the customer was supposed to inspect the item they purchased, and they were the ones who would claim this and return it. In this case, eBay had 'authenticated' the item before it was repacked and shipped out internationally.  Both cases happen to be international purchases.  Does anyone have this problem?  I can't afford to keep having problems as I lose shipping costs, and it's not right that eBay takes it upon itself and decides not to ship to the customer.  The customer to me he/she was devastated.

Item failed authenticated?

EBay decides that certain listings go through the Authenticity Guarantee program.  There is more information at the links below.  When an item is authenticated it is sent by the seller to the authenticator and once it passes inspection, it is forwarded to the buyer.   If something in the listing doesn’t match the item, it will be returned to the seller.

Thanks for the information. I was never aware of this before, and I have sold quite a few pieces of jewelry since 2013.  I am confused, though. I have just sent a gemstone to the GIA for certification, and it costs $80.00 plus shipping cost for priority with signature there and back. It also takes weeks for it to be returned once it's certified.  How is eBay able to have GIA certified without charge?

Perhaps the item was damaged since they recorded it arrived in damaged packaging and didn't match the listing.

You didn't say they made a claim that it doesnt appear authentic.

At least that's a positive sign because you'd end up with a policy violation for attempting to sell inauthentic items.

However what it comes down to is GIA claims the item doesn't match the description.

It's pretty much assumption based on the information you provided.

The authentication program can be helpful. Say the international buyer wants to return. It will go back to the authenticator so if they try and switch it out then eBay will reject it and you will keep the sale.

You didn't say whether they shipped this ring back to you.  If you received it back, did it appear to have suffered any damage?
