That depends - will the back ordered item ship within your stated handling time?

I don't believe it is possible especially if the item that is back ordered can' be shipped within your stated handling time.

This is a problem if you are dropshipping or listing items you don't already have on hand.

It would be best to cancel as out of stock because you are out of stock and take your defect for it. IMO.

If I was your buyer, I wouldn't want my purchase piecemealed to me.

There should be no backorder, unless the item was a preorder following ebays preorder policy. ebay is 100% about only selling what you own & possess, not misrepresenting ownership. Those that do so are part of the problem...

     Not much detail but I am assuming this relates to one of the pre-order items you had/have listed. As others mentioned it depends on your handling and shipping times and buyer coordination. Shipping a partial order may result in buyer filing a NAD and one way or another you are probably going to get dinged. 

     I would coordinate with the buyer to see how they want to proceed.
