I'm still confused by how local pickup works if I'm the seller. We meet up and the buyer has to pay via Paypal? What if he later starts a case with paypal or later with his credit card claiming he never got the item? What proof do I have to let Paypal know for sure he did get the item? That's the part I don't understand. I don't want to worry buyer will later file a claim against me.
What if the buyer does some searching and finds out you have the item for sale locally and at a lower price and before buying on Ebay, he asks via the local site if he can buy from you locally (not Ebay) at the lower price YET still wants to pay via Paypal. He refuses to pay cash.
I tell him if we meet locally (not the ebay transaction), that I accept cash only . He still wants to use Paypal. I sell locally quite a bit but only accept cash. Why wouldn't a buyer still want to use Paypal? I've never had a buyer locally ask to pay any other way but cash. He seemed peeved that I would not do that.
Thanks.

If a buyer uses PayPal to pay for a local pickup item, they can try to file a complaint, but they will lose.
So no way they can do a chargeback with their credit card company?
Sure they can but just like a claim under the MBG it's an easy win for the seller as long as they don't ignore the issue.

Let me use my example, so I can see exactly how I will fare.
I inherited my late mom's sterling silver flatware - serving for 8 in a very heavy chest.
I want to do local pickup.
If a buyer insists on using paypal, can he take it home then file chargeback because he claims they are only silver plate or that pieces are missing.
Since paypal deals with the credit card company and I have no input, will they fight it as hard as I would.
Will paypal who seems to be very free with returns just refund his money.
I am using local pickup because it is heavy and also because it is so many pieces it is easy for buyer to say it is incomplete.
So am I 100% covered or do I have to fight for my life with paypal and cc.

Hi Em, yes the buyer can still file snad..if he gets home and has the pieces tested and they are not what you claimed they were. And I will say too, several years ago my ebay friend did a local pick up on a collectors item, and the buyer filed a chargeback on his cc and won..I cant remember all the details now..may have been a snad claim, Im not sure.

NOT TRUE!
I posted before - read Paypal SELLER PROTECTION. Seller has NONE if he/she takes Paypal for local pickup. Buyer CAN file INR and will win. Period.
Anyone who takes Paypal for pickup is foolish. Let the buyer get a cash advance if he doesn't have funds in the bank.
What strangers say on a chat board is meaningless. What Paypal posts online about the details of their policy IS what will take place if buyer files INR or SNAD for pickup.
See the link https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/mpp/security/seller-protection
See what is not covered:

But I do remember my friend never got her item back.

Yes, everone is posting it is a slam dunk for the seller, and I am just not seeing it that way.
Thank you for confirming what I was afraid of.
Think I will take it locally instead.

I think you are better off.

You might want to read PayPal's buyer protection policy which says that the buyer is not protected on items that they pick up.

Thats correct if they file a INR or SNAD dispute through paypal, but if they go directly to their CC and file a unauthorized use dispute you won't win that... Just the old three card monty game...

Maybe thats what happened to my friend..not a snad..she lost her money and her item.

I do not go by what ebay and paypal says, I go by how others have fared.
That is why what happened to Dee's friend says more to me than some boilerplate text.

Without a doubt..I sold a very expensive pick up item..an antique barber chair in original condition..guy was here visiting from Az., saw the ebay auction, bought it, rented a truck and drove it all the way back to Az,he owned a barber shop...paid cash..went smooth as silk..Ive been lucky with local pick ups.

Fellow asked me a couple weeks ago about being afraid of taking a paypal payment like I told him the second he drove on the property its on video and the conversation was being recorded and I'd hate to see him in small claims court. The hugemanatee I'd have to deal with would cost him a additional five hundy...
