"I’m told by law enforcement these UPS bags are especially sought after by thieves opening cargo containers… they are often full of boxes with merchandise bound for residential addresses. More valuable than say, a cargo container full of low value bulky items like toilet paper."
The author went to the LA rail yard for a look. He said that he did not see one USPS package on the ground. One out of four containers on the trains had been broken open.
Maybe you shouldn't ship via UPS if the package might go through LA? (Or Chicago, for the same reason, but that's another story.)

It's not just UPS, it's Fedex, too. This was from last November: https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/los-angeles-cargo-train-theft-packages-missing-delayed-fede.../

...and ABC World News this evening broadcast a short story on this, too.

That's not as exciting.
Understand the criminal mind - part of it is risk and seeing how much you can get away with. Working at a job like the rest of we regular people just doesn't give them that thrill. Similar to hackers.

Interesting read.............
We ship every day with USPS and UPS most days.
Minus MEMPHIS USPS hub and I parcel that was heavily delayed in Jersey City - we have not had issues and fortunately or unfortunately, we get to ship to Cali every week of the year. 🙂
Yes, there is theft, there are and continue to be issues with every service out there. But the chicken little approach to this as a broad brush warning really is not warranted. Parcels with UPS and Fedex are typically insured and while the story comments made for a great laugh.............we do not have endless posts from Sellers on the Shipping board here and Amazon boards screaming about these issues.
Sometimes bad things happen to good Sellers. As for me and my sales..........I will continue to keep shipping to Cali. (reserve the right to change my mind, should more of it slide into the Pacific....)
