I know a buyer has 4 days to pay once a case is opened agaisnt them for not paying, but if no such case is opened, how many days does a seller have to wait before they can relist the item without the buyer being able to do anything about it?

The buyer can pay up to 36 days after the transaction. So the seller has to wait until day 37 to be sure that they won't end up with two paying buyers for one item. I suppose the seller could start an auction-format listing a few days earlier, if it would end after day 36.

Why wouldn't you want to cancel so you can get your fees back.
But to answer your question
The ebay policy is a buyer is allowed 48 hours to pay (2 full days) before a seller can open an UnPaid Item claim. After opening the buyer then has 96 hours (4 days) of additional time to pay before a seller can close the UPI claim. If a seller does nothing about nonpayment, the transaction is valid for 32 days.

Thank you both, although I'm seeing one answer is 32 days and the other is 36. I guess to be safe, I'll go with 36. 🙂

Makes sense that technically it is 36 since you could open the unpaid item case on day 32 which gives them 4 more days to pay...but you really need to file the case.

Question ... why would a seller NOT open UID?

The reason I don't want to file a UID is simple. I meant to list if for $99.50 but ended up listing it by mistake for $9.50, bad typo on my part, and I didn't notice the mistake until after they grabbed it. The buyer hasn't paid in over a week, so I'm not about to remind them. If they don't pay, and if I don't file a case, then I'm only out about $1.35 in ebay fees. OTOH, if they pay, then I'm losing around $85 because the item is easily worth the $95.50 that I meant to list if for. However, if they pay, I'll certainly bite the bullet and honor the sale.

Hopefully eBay prodding will not cause a payment

eBay generally sends a rmineder after two days. So if the buyer hasn't repsonded to that, that's probably a good sign that they're not going to pay.

I would just block and report the buyer and relist the item.
Seems kind of harsh but it's business.

Not understanding why OP is willing to put that item on hold for over a month when there are more expedient ways to handle it.

What are these more expedient ways to handle it?

Open up a case for non pay then close 4 days later.
Instead of just waiting a month for the transaction to expire.

OP already already said that the item sold for $9.50, when they meant to list it for $99.50 and thats why they didnt want to open a case, fearing the buyer would pay and they would be out $$$$.
