IRS announces delay for implementation of $600 reporting threshold for third-party payment platforms

I read this on the IRS website link to article , the $600 dollar threshold for eBay to generate a 1099K form has been delayed until the 2023 tax reporting year, the article from the IRS was dated before Christmas 2022, I have been waiting to file my taxes, thinking I would be getting a form from eBay.  When this was decided I think eBay should have sent an email to all of their sellers to notify them of this change, maybe a lot of people already knew this, but I am sure there are a lot of people who don't know. Ebay, pleases send an email to all sellers explaining this.

Make it easy for yourself. Regardless of the amount, just gather the information about your overall profits for 2022 & report it.

Ebay does not hold your hand....

Ebay did send out an announcement at the end of 2022.

Ebay did Announce this change and there have been quite a few threads here on the subject.  It has also been on the National and Local news, or at least it was where I live.

But keep in mind @714ricki advice is good advice.  With or without a FORM, which is all a 1099K is, if you have earned income of any kind from anywhere you should be claiming it on your Federal Tax Return.

The IRS does NOT have a minimum threshold for reporting income.

So even though you didn't get the FORM, you still need to report your income to the IRS.

I report my income from eBay every year, but,  I have never met the threshold before because it was $20,000, this year they have been warning us that it changed and lots of people will get a 1099k that never got them before, so I was waiting on their official form.

No biggie; it's Feb 19th; IRS just opened their doors for the tax year anyway, so you will still be 'quite early'.

@davjon70

If you had $20,000+ and 200+ transactions, the 1099K should have already been released to you.  Have you checked your Tax Reports under the Payment tab in your Seller Hub?

IRS delayed the reduction of the threshold on this form until 2023.

You have saved yourself a lot of headaches and likely money by reporting your income correctly.  For any seller that thought the $20K threshold on this form was also somehow the threshold for all of IRS, those sellers will have a bit of explaining to do if they had not been reporting their income in previous years.

I personally have had a conversation with a few sellers that ONLY reported income IF they passed the $20,000K threshold.  I wouldn't want to be in their shoes.

It was in all the news.  And yes, the announcement did come from the IRS on December 23, when lots and lots of people were preoccupied with other things.

There was one place on the internet where this news did get a lot of immediate exposure and a lot of immediate discussion.  Right here.

The eBay Community > Buying & Selling > Selling.

In other words, you, OP, found this community board to post your opinion that eBay should have sent you an e-mail telling you about this change.   It's a good thing that you have found this board now.  Hope you come back and read through current and previous posts.  It can be very educational.

@davjon70   advise you, especially as a seller, to keep up with ebay announcements, bc ebay DID notify us of that change, here it is>

Regardless, anyone who doesn't report their income minus write-offs is committing tax fraud and that income is not dependent upon receiving a 1099
