Wouldn't they just come out of your allotment of free listings that you have with your store level?
If you don't want to end them early, you can just put your store on a Vacation Hold for the period of time that you are gone. That is a very nice perk of having a store. Just remember to check the box to hide your listings so that buyer's can't see the listings while you are gone. It just avoid issues.
GTC listings are here to stay. So hopefully you will find a way to use them to your advantage. If you have any questions, please ask.

A message to ebay. I typically spend $100 a month on purchases via Ebay. I won't do that now to offset the loss of business. Not sure how anyone there thinks this was a good idea.
Well, yeah, but did ebay give you permission to go on vacation? If not, well then, it is all your own fault.

I suppose that if you think the fee you pay for your store is ONLY for the free listing allotment this would be true. But the reality of that is NOT the case. A store has far more value and perks beyond the listing allotment. There is a lot of value in having a store and it goes beyond the allotment of free listings.
Of course you pay a fee for selling something on the site. Ebay provided a service in which you use to sell your item.
Then it is your choice to close the listings early. Ebay is willing and able to allow you to let the listing run the full 30 days. Each seller can make the choice for themselves if they want to end it sooner than that.
I do understand that GTC doesn't work for everyone and it has really cause significant issues for some sellers. It is highly likely that it is here to stay.

Vacation setting does NOT "end" items. They are still active but can't be purchased by anyone if you set your vacation setting not to allow them to. Or you can have it set to allow them to purchase, but that is rarely a good idea as it will affect your shipping ratings. You have a few variations on the vacation setting to pay close attention to so that you choose the right options for you. But the vaca setting does NOT end listings.

It is a mistake many sellers have made over the years. But the shipping policy doesn't have an exception for those putting their stores on Vaca WITHOUT hiding their listings. If you leave your listings available for purchase without extending your handling time, then yes you will get dinged for late shipments. I'm not sure I understand why you would thing you wouldn't. But now you know what you need to do to avoid this in the future.
