Did you mean:

I just don't get the search results

If I list something as "ITEM" and not another word.  I think It would sell faster than anything I tried to get right.

Just ran a search for 3000 gph electric trash pump.
Electric Trash Pump 3000:  66 results, not sure if there's an electric one in there or not, All I see are gas and diesel pumps. Just got tired of looking and quit.
Knowing what I want is cheaper than all the gas powered ones, I filtered Low$ to High$.
Zero Results.

Sure, this can all be explained.
66 results, might ALL be irrelevant.....
Sort low to high, now Zero results

Now, I'll find what I want (I think).   It's just never been this much of a pain in the rear to find items. And it just seems to be getting worse

Re: I just don't get the search results

Ebay recently changed their search algorithms to be similar to what Amazon has had for years.  Instead of showing you what you searched for they show you what they THINK you want to find based on millions of similar searches and what people eventually clicked on, etc.  If you put quotes "around" any particular word (or words) then your searches will include those words... like  "Electric" Trash Pump 3000

Re: I just don't get the search results

I know that. You know that.
If only the majority of eBay shoppers knew that.
AND, Sorting from Low to High, should take the results and put them in order.
Not, get rid of all the results.

Re: I just don't get the search results

I did 'electric trash pump' and got 78; filter for 'lowest price' and went to 68.

Looking at them, I see various 'sizes' and 'conditions' but did see 3000 gph and MOST were new.

Re: I just don't get the search results

just tried it again.
ELECTRIC TRASH PUMP 3000 (64 results)  most are fuel powered.
Sort Lowest$ to Highest$ (Zero results).

If I type in
ELECTRIC TRASH PUMP (50 results) 5th one down says 3000 gph in the title.
Sort Lowest$ to Highest$ (69 results) .

If I stand on my head, type with my toes, use " in several places and search:
"What" the heck
462 results, and no trash pumps.
Therefore, search must be working as designed 😂

Just searched:
stainless engine cover
sorted low to high.
That's a nice pocket knife, but the toggle switch under it is pretty also.
..and there it is, exactly what I was looking for.
VINTAGE HOTCHKISS LAPEL PIN FRANCE

Re: I just don't get the search results

An alternative search for trash pump:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=trash+pump&_sacat=184085&rt=nc&Power%2520Source=Elect...

Many sellers are listing flow rates in gallons per minute; I noticed several 53 g/m units.

I understand you are pointing out difficulties with the search that some buyers will encounter. Like you, many of those buyers will try an alternative search and wind up finding what they are looking for via different means.

Could eBay change things to make it easier for some? Of course.

Would a particular change make some other things harder for other users? Maybe.

Might eBay be taking both of those into consideration when deciding whether or not to implement a change? Difficult to say with any certainty, but eBay likely has better data than you or I, and eBay has an incentive to get it right or lose lots of money.

That is not to say that eBay always makes the right choice, or that those choices are implemented correctly; clearly some things are broken, such as the "Lowest first" sorts where 99+% of the results are filtered out entirely.

But it is also clear eBay thinks "Lowest first" sorts should be doing some filtering, despite what many people assume about how sort is supposed to work; otherwise eBay would not have implemented the "see more results" message. Users still need to convince eBay that the filtering is going too far, and the "see more results" message is not always appearing as it should.

Often it is not enough to simply point out that things are "broken". You may need to demonstrate to eBay that "fixing" things is actually worth it. And in many cases, someone at eBay may still be convinced that things are actually working as intended, even when they are clearly not.

do it without the 3000; that's what I did.

I have found, searching for years (not just this 'new search that everyone states don't work) that many times I have to NOT be so detailed, but just input what I'm looking for.

Trash Pump?? or to drill down a little better:

Electric Trash Pump- then see what they have (which is when I got the results I got)

When I want Slot Machine Coins- I try 'casino coins' 'casino tokens' 'slot machine coins' etc.

Re: I just don't get the search results

@stainlessenginecovers
I ended up buying basically the 1st 3000gph I found.   There are thousands of trash pumps, which might be called sewage pumps, which some are called submersible pumps, although not all trash pumps are submersible pumps, and not all submersible pumps are trash pump.
The GPH could be almost any number you can think of.  Thus the reason for trying 3000.

But, as what I assume (what happened to my sales?), I assume many many times the shopper ends up frustrated and just buying the 1st one they see.
