The other day Pizza Hut Hawaii released their "Lanyard Lei". They do this ever few years. The lanyard, ID holder and a card good for a personal pan pizza is $5. I bought several of them. I use the card for myself and sell the lanyard online for $7 plus $5 S&H. I had my first sale today. The customer is local. They can get it here for $5 instead of $12. I even checked with the buyers hometown Pizza Hut location, they still have them available for sale.
I was going to message the buyer and thank them for the purchase but let him know he can get it locally and ask if he wants me to cancel the sale. Am i crazy? Would you do the same?

If you have to physically go in the restaurant to make this purchase it may be this buyer is not able. Also time is money and it may be cheaper to get yours than spend an extra hour in the day for this.

I think maybe the buyer got banned from that Pizza Hut for ordering pineapple on his pizza. 🙂

Maybe the extra $7 they paid you was worth not having to go to Pizza Hut.

Great decision. Building "goodwill" goes a long way. Smart move

I would have contacted the buyer at least to let him know. Reading the responses you made the right decision and possibly picked up a follower for potential future sales. I have not ben to HI in a while with regards to the Pizza can you get one with SPAM? I remember the McD's big breakfast came with SPAM.

I bought 4 Notre Dame postcards for $1 once at a drug store that was nearly across the street from the University, thinking that the ND items are not as readily available nationwide as they are in South Bend.
I sold them for $10 plus shipping to the Notre Dame archives Dept.
I emailed the Director and asked him why he wanted them, he said they like to keep copies of all Notre Dame items.
I could have told him that he could walk across the street and buy them for 25 cents each, they had hundreds, but I didn't want to embarrass him, so I donated two 19th century Notre Dame monogrammed plates and a 1920s football novelty to the archives Dept., they are Catholics after all, and I wanted to stay on the safe side.

My take: If they've already paid, just ship it.
I can appreciate the 'ethical' route for sure though. It builds goodwill when and often earns you a customer later.
My story: For what I sell, LEGO parts pre-bagged in set quantities, I do often get people asking if they could only by 5 instead of the 50 pack, for example. I respond with "Thank you for your interest. The parts are prebagged and ready to ship in the quantities listed only, and I do not do custom lots. However, are you asking because you have purchased a LEGO set and it seems you have missing pieces? Did you know LEGO will replace them for free by going to... (LEGO website for missing pieces)? Now, once you have your set build and have great ideas for building extra things onto the set, come see my store for those needs."
Seems like most that ask for this say a massive thank you, and do end up coming back as a customer later.

I don't have a local pizza hut. If I wanted pizza hut I would have to drive for about an hour. (I don't care for their pizza or their prices.) Maybe your buyers are in the same situation.

I like a ham and pineapple pizza, but not the ones they have here with so called Canadian Bacon. I like it with REAL diced ham.

Yep. Too bad the only things they can't (won't?) replace are missing parts of minifigure blind bags.

I see no ethical question at all. You are not crazy, you are just overthinking things.
The idea of a consumer having "perfect information" is merely an economics 101 theory, not a reality. And there is no obligation for a retailer to educate consumers about how to buy somewhere else.
I would sell him the lanyard and not give it another thought.

"I heard back from the buyer.
He wants to go through with the order.
Apparently they are sold out of the color he wants."
There you go! The buyer had a reasonable reason!
Congrats on the sale and the goodwill you also created!

Five-0 always gets their man. Just wait until you hear " Book'em, Danno!"

My first meal at a Pizza Hut restaurant was eaten after attending the movie theater.
