How would you handle this???

Had a lot of 6 Cutco brand knives.  Had an auction for all 6.   Sold for $300.  Winning bidder had 0 feedback.  Didn't pay.  I sent an invoice after 4 days.  Waited 2 days before I threatened a Non-pay case via PM.  Bidder sent the following eBay PM:

I was wondering if I would be able to cancel the order? I just got eBay and had no idea how it worked. I was messing around trying to figure out how bidding worked and accidentally bid. Is there something we can work out?

I was annoyed, but not yet mad.  2nd placed bidder ALSO bid $300.   Sent 2nd chance offer.  No response.  Sent 2nd chance offer to 3rd place bidder-$225.  No response.  Now I'm getting mad.

Re-listed and broke into two lots of three knives.  Now the ORIGINALLY WINNER, who sent me the PM asking me to cancel, HAS BID ON ONE OF THE TWO LOTS.  STILL HAS ZERO FEEDBACK.

At this point, I'm furious.  At winning bidder, for jacking up original auction, then waiting 5 days before indicating they weren't going to pay.  At both back-up bidders.  At at winning bidder with 0 feedback, for having the nerve to bid again.

Do I have ANY sort of recourse?  Or do I have to bend over and take this??

Re: How would you handle this???

What “ useless dither” are you referring to?? Auction ended Sunday, I sent ONE INVOICE as a gentle reminder on Tuesday, and then a POLITE PM, indicating that I had their items boxed and ready to go once payment was made. I indicated, AGAIN POLITELY, that I most certainly DID NOT wish to open an unpaid item case, but that they were leaving me no choice. HOW IS ANY OF THAT INAPPROPRIATE OR, TO USE YOUR TERMS, USELESS DITHER??

Please take your negativity elsewhere. If this is you trying not to be offensive, I’d hate to be around you when you ARE offensive.

Re: How would you handle this???

It's just the honest truth, whether you wish to hear it or not.  It is not a good idea to send invoices and no need to give a polite warning of what you will be "forced" to do.  It is a threat, even if polite.   Just file the unpaid item case when you can and proceed.   We all get a few that never pay.

Second chance offers rarely work.

Re: How would you handle this???

The under bidders have NO obligation to buy - that’s why it’s called a second chance offer.

Re: How would you handle this???

I see the set of six originally BIN'ed for $125. What happened there? Your other transactions appear successful (Smiley Happy) but the long history with these knives seems fishy. Hope you're not paying FVF's all along the way.

I purchase a fair amount of inventory on eBay via the auction format. Unfortunately the Achilles Heel of the 2nd chance offer system here on eBay is that while I may have been the 1st place loser in a particular auction I most certainly do not want to pay the 1st place loser's price.

I want to pay my highest bid AFTER ALL OF THE NON PAYING BUYER'S (a possible shill) BIDS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BID HISTORY, AS IF THEY NEVER EXISTED.

I know that this is not your fault, but why should the 1st place loser pay you $300.00?

As the 1st place loser for all I know the non paying buyer jacked up the auction on your behalf. And the same goes for the offer sent out to the 2nd place loser.

As a buyer I have no idea whatsoever if you the seller are working with or colluding with a shill. This is not your fault. Unfortunately for you it is the fault of eBay's 2nd chance offer system.

In general I tend to decline or do not respond to almost 95% of the 2nd chance offers that are sent to me, because of the restrictive system that eBay has put into place to deal with situations such as this.

It may sound harsh how they are saying i but what these posters are saying is accurate.  Don't send an invoice and don't message.  eBay already sends reminders it unnecessary and the results usually don't help the situation.  You can open an unpaid item dispute 48 hours after the end of a listing.   You can even set it to auto open.   You close it after 4 days and you're done.   Anything else is unnecessary

Re: How would you handle this???

This is how I would handle the situation:

1)  After the time allowed by my TOS (3 Business Days) I would open a UID if the winning bidder hadn't paid or contacted me.

A) If they then paid within the 96 hours allotted by the UID process, I ship and thank them for their business.

B)  If they didn't pay within the 96 hours, I'd close the dispute giving them a strike, place them on my BBL and cancel any bids they may have placed on any of my other items.

C)  I would then re-list the item unless I had decided to make a SCO.  However, I rarely make such second chance offers.

I have had non-paying bidders contact me after I re-listed the item because they found themselves blocked.  I usually just ignore them.  When it comes to blocking non-paying bidders, I go by the "Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me" principle.

Of course, if listing at a fixed price I always recommend using the IPR setting.

Re: How would you handle this???

The first person to BIN for $125, paid via PayPal and then requested to cancel-they said they had some eBay gift cards they wished to use instead. Insisted they wanted the knives and would re-purchase right away, but with their gift cards. Since they had ZERO feedback, it sounded suspicious to me, but I cancelled the transaction anyway. Contacted them via PM and they told me there was “an issue” with their gift cards and they weren’t sure when it would be resolved. So then I listed the knives again, and came into the SECOND round of drama this post was about.
