I sold an item on eBay and had to split it in 4 medium sized packages. It was undeliverable so it was returned to sender, but they have never arrived it has been over a month. How do I file a claim with USPS? Would I file as the sender or as a recipient since it was "return to sender". Any help or insight would be great Thanks

Not sure what postage class you sent the packages under but packages are returned to sender using the same class as they were sent. File as the sender because that is what you are.

There are also timelines regarding when you can submit an insurance claim for a lost package and USPS will often try to drag out a missing package claim beyond the deadline for filing the insurance claim so I generally just file an insurance claim.

Hi, what kind of claim are you trying to open? It can take much longer than a month for packages that have been returned to sender, so not time to worry, yet. Below is the link to the Help pages about it from the USPS. Is that the carrier? I wanted to send it along in case it is of some benefit:

Refused item are not eligible for protections. Are you sure you need it back? You should get to keep the money.

My experience with USPS - typically unless insurance was purchased, there is no insurance outside of a very small handful of services - priority mail & up. Try filing a claim online: https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm As others have indicated - you have a very limited timeframe & it typically only covers initial delivery. Service continues to decline with USPS & with their slowing down delivery even more intentionally, return to senders are subject to same priority handling as Media Mail items - basically when they feel like it. I hope you do receive your items back - but do not be surprised if they do not arrive before Labor Day..

In reality USPS Insurance no longer exists except for the part where they will accept the premium.

Strange since I have filed two claims in the last several months and have received a check from USPS for both of those. One was a lost item the other was damaged in shipping. The latter was a bit more difficult to get approved and closed out.
