I've just been wondering how long the average seller waits to leave buyer feedback. Is 3 days after product delivery sufficient? Or is that too small of a window to wait for a buyer to try to initiate a return or refund?

I leave FB when I ship the item.

It depends on the buyer.
Has the buyer made any recent purchases?
Has the buyer been buying similar items?
If I see the buyer has been buying items regularly I will leave feedback.
If I see buyer has not made purchases or sold anything lately ...I will wait for buyer to post feedback first.

I leave feedback when I ship has a sort of "handshake", letting the buyer know their item is on its way and thanking them.
What they do after that is what they do - I can't control the behaviour of other people, only my own.

That is true but you can control what/when feedback you leave that may end up praising an unscrupulous buyer.

It doesn't matter to me, though - I really enjoy getting buyer feedback, but I'm not feeding anyone's ego when I leave it, just thanking them. Same as I would do in RL if I handed something to a customer over the counter. I'm not going to wait for 30 days to thank them just in case they bring it back for a refund, or have a fit about something or say "I'm taking my 'thank you' back!"

Once you leave it you can't really take it back. (the point) If it is working for you, awesome. I don't consider refunds anything bad (shenanigans) but it is frustrating when those you do thank poop in your face. (not literally 😀)

That's what the smart-azz response is for 😁 (joking/not joking).
But yeah, I try to stay very neutral in the f/b.

Everyone does it differently.
I myself post it right away, but mine simply is a thank you and a date when the item will ship out. Nothing more or less than that.

My general rule of thumb:
As a seller:
1. First time buyers, 30 days or asap 30 days after documented delivery of item.
2.First time buyers who message to thank me, asap after message.
3. Repeat buyers, generally asap after cleared payment.
This is whether or not I receive feedback from the buyer.
As a buyer:
1. Asap, after receiving item & confirming the item is as described (or reasonably so).
2. Never, after receiving item that has significant issues, if I determine it to be honest/good faith errors.
I am not going to lie & say all was well when it wasn't nor will I reward a seller for not knowing their product. However, I don't ever want to give an otherwise good seller a bad mark when I am reasonably certain the errors (however diminishing the value of the purchase) were honest/good faith errors.

I leave feedback when the buyer does the ONE THING they are required to do ... pay.
I leave auto-feedback as soon as they pay.

They are not required to like it. 😉

Personally that has never bothered me a bit because I'm the type of person that wants to thank someone for paying me. That doesn't change just because they are unhappy with their item.

I dont wait.
I just auto feedback moment they purchase. Don't waste time on things that don't give you any benefits.
