How can a cash transaction be done in a way that eBay has proof of payment?

Just thought about this. If not using PayPal in arranging payment for a pick-up only item, how can it be worked? I've read somewhere here that a buyer said ebay continues to send out notices of item not being paid for. Perhaps put another way - how does eBay prefer that local pick-up only item be paid for?

Yes, clearly the myth continues because a buyer CAN file an item not received on a local pickup. They would have to have proof through eBay messages that the seller was not making the item available and not arranging to meet in order to win the case, however.

When I requested the article it was the goal to have one place to link to when local pickup questions arise. Trinton composed the article and chose not to include the details on INRs and SNADs which are some of the most commonly asked questions about local pickup. He would have to revise the article. If he would like assistance I would be happy to put together some text that he can proof and correct should I get anything wrong.

Hi @Anonymous, the purpose of the Knowledge Base articles is to supplement the information available in our Help Pages or address something that is not covered elsewhere. Protection for local pickup transactions are addressed in our Help Pages, so these were not repeated in the Knowledge Base article and instead links to those Help Pages were provided in the first paragraph.

@Anonymous, I can understand and appreciate that, but I think the big concern is interpreting and understanding those policy pages tends to trip up sellers new to the local pickup process. That's why INRs and SNADs are so frequently asked about on this board.

@bonjourami, that's because the displayed text is accurate but the hyperlink in the post is directing you somewhere else. Here's the correct link:

Hi @Anonymous, I've begun reviewing the Local Pickup Knowledge Base article and I wanted to double check with you what details you felt were not included. I have listed quite a few questions and answers about Item not received requests and return requests that address what is eligible for coverage, how a seller can remain protected, and provide links to relevant Help Pages that may provide more detail. Let me know what you feel is missing and I will be happy to look into what may need to be added.

@Anonymous- I think INRs are covered well enough. The SNAD section is the one that links to policy and is where sellers get tripped up understanding that policy.

Is a buyer covered through a return request or item not as described case related to a local pickup transaction?

Yes. As long as the transaction meets the eligibility requirements for the eBay Money Back Guarantee, the buyer will be protected as in any other transaction. Return requests for items picked up locally are very uncommon, as the buyer has the opportunity to inspect/test out the item in most instances when they arrive to pick up their purchase. If a buyer decides after inspection that they do not want the item any longer, a seller is encouraged to cancel the transaction and relist.

I would add in something you said in the past that gave sellers a good idea of what's covered for a SNAD and what isn't. You gave an example of a washing machine and said if the seller was unable to provide the buyer an opportunity to plug it in and test it before taking it home, that item would be eligible for a SNAD if the buyer got it home and it didn't work. But if it was something like an armchair the buyer could easily and thoroughly inspect it before bringing it home. If the buyer discovers a stain after bringing the chair home then it doesn't qualify for buyer protection since the buyer had the opportunity to examine it before bringing it home.

Hi @Anonymous, thank you for clarifying! I can clarify that the protections offered in a return request today are the same for an item picked up locally as they are for one that was shipped. While in the past there were considerations in place for if the item could or could not be fully inspected upon pickup, this is no longer the case; if a buyer has a concern with the item they can request to return it as with any other transaction. This is why there are no exceptions or notes added to this portion of the Help Page or the Knowledge Base article, as these qualifications no longer apply.

That being said, return requests for items picked up locally are uncommon, likely in part due to the fact that the buyer can inspect the item in person and voice concerns at that time. Should they have reason to return the item after they have retrieved it, they would be able to request this and the request would be handled in the same way that any other purchase would be addressed.

That's a very interesting change, Trinton. Can you provide more detail on the return process in the unlikely event a buyer might claim SNAD on a local pickup item? Specifically with regards to the return process- the seller is not responsible for providing return shipping since the buyer elected local pickup, correct? The buyer would be held responsible for either physically returning and/or shipping the item back to the seller?

If the seller offered the option of shipping or local pickup and the buyer chose pickup- does that change anything since shipping was offered as an option initially?

Also- is there a time frame where the claim would be closed out if the buyer has not made return arrangements? @Anonymous

i have read that a snad complaint with a pick up item is decided on a case to case basis, that there is no fixed criteria on that, is that also true?

Hi @coffeebean832, a return for an item picked up locally would be handled like any other return; if the seller offers free returns or is responsible for return shipping because of the return reason, then they would need to cover the cost of the return. That being said, a buyer and seller can easily arrange a meeting place for the return as they did for the initial pickup. The other shipping options would not be a factor, as they are not a factor in any other return request. The return request timeframes would be the same for an item that was picked up locally as they are for an item that was shipped to the buyer.

To summarize, when we state that a return for a local pickup transaction is covered as in any other transaction, we mean exactly that - the transaction is covered in the same way, with the same expectations, and the same timeframes as any other transaction. There are no unique ways that items are protected based on shipping method.

Lastly, I want to add that this has been the case for some time now; in the past the topic of local pickup has resulted in a large amount of discussion regarding hypothetical worst case scenarios and I want to head this off. Though local pickup transactions are not handled any differently than transactions where the item was shipped, the possible issues that could arise have been possible, and are possible for other transactions. I understand the possibility of loss can be stressful, but local pickup provides many benefits and the approach we take with these return requests does correlate with an increase in problems as some may fear it does.

Always get a receipt or copy of a receipt. At least you will have some legal document.
