How can I protect myself??

Long story short, I sold my personal macbook air this week and today the buyer received it and almost immediately opened a return request which eBay approved automatically. The reason for his return is "I need 1tb instead of 500gb, ordered by mistake". I been dealing with eBay for more than a decade now and I know about all the different scams and I just know he will try to screw me over. My mistake was shipping it without checking the address first as I usually only ship to residential address just to be safe, specially with expensive items. This buyer used a random big commercial building in MO. I contacted eBay upon the request being opened and asked why was it automatically approved when I thought I could refuse the return if is  just because of a change of mind and not something wrong with the item or not as advertised. I know about recording the opening of the package and inspecting the item on camera but I would like to know what else I can do to protect myself. Im also aware of the fake scan returns where the label gets scanned as delivered even if it never was so a video in that situation would not be possible. Thank you in advance for any guidance!!

"Automatically approved"...that's unlikely. You had so many days to do something and I assume you didn't.

eBay does not refund automatically.  There is a number of days to do a refund.

And a "commercial building"...buyer probably wanted his eBay items purchased sent to where he works.

Recording and taking photos of the item is useless, Ebay does not accept them, they can be doctored.This sure sounds like a remorse  return, and you can refuse if you have no returns, but it sounds like Ebay doesnt agree with that. Just provide a return label, and refund after return. If he doesnt return your exact item, you can appeal after the case is closed. Sorry.

Sorry, I see you have thirty day returns, that means you accept a return for any reason.

Make sure the buyer has a prepaid return label furnished by eBay or yourself.

You don't really have a major league problem at this point if the buyer has a return label.

You have to see what the buyer sends back. Come back and let us know how this plays out. Probably everything will be fine aside from being out some shipping costs.

Don't worry about making any videos as they won't come into play.

@coppedco

You accept returns, but for remorse reasons you have "buyer pays return shipping", so they should have to ship it back on their dime.  They can buy the label from eBay in these instances.

However, if the buyer selected a "not as described" reason from the dropdown menu and simply stated they ordered by mistake in the comments, then you have to fund the return label.

You could refuse a remorse return ONLY if you had a 'no returns' policy.

There is only one way to absolutely protect yourself as a seller. Don’t sell online. Sell locally for cash. It is too late to mitigate one’s risk on eBay after the sale has taken place. Now you have to play the waiting game to see what you get back.

But that said, so far, the buyer has done nothing untoward about this return request. You offer returns. eBay approved it. Your customer bought the wrong item and honestly admitted as much. So, now he needs to send it back, as per your stated policy.

At this point you have suspicions, not facts. It is counter-productive to view an uncomplicated buyer return request as an automatic scam attempt. Give the buyer the benefit of the doubt—at least until something in their behavior signals fraud. That hasn’t happened here— a scammer always, eventually, tips their hand.

PS—As others have mentioned, video evidence of boxing and/or unboxing is useless for eBay’s purposes. They will not accept or view it. Now, it might have some value in a court of law, or small claims, but not here with eBay.

The return was automatically approved, not the refund.

Im just preparing for the worst because everything so far seems off. The buyer even has computers and computer parts for sale too so he definitely knows the huge difference between 500GB and 1TB in storage. I'll update again once he returns it.

Sorry to say that you sold an expensive item on ebay. There are so many things that can go wrong. When I have something of high value, I sell it locally for cash and avoid these headaches.

Hi @coppedco

 I could be wrong … but he sounds to me like an honest buyer.  I believe you’ll get back the item you sent in the same condition as you sent it.  But let us know what happens.

@coppedco

The return was automatically approved by ebay because you have a 30-day return policy. Since the buyer chose a remorse reason, he pays return shipping.

I'm not so sure it's a scam!
