Handling Fees

I have just sold an item for $20 but will be shipping across country for approximately $80 as it weighs close to 30 pounds.   Therefore, I will be paying $10 in ebay fees.  I see on the shipping charges line there is a handling fee that I can charge.   Just wondered if I can add a handling fee and if so what is reasonable for normal?  How does the buyer know what the seller may add on for the handling fee or should I have already put that in my listing?

You must honor the terms of the sale.

You cannot decide afterward that you are going to charge a handling fee. That is against eBay policy, not to mention that it is entirely unfair to the buyer.

Unsolicited advice ...

If the buyer claims your item "is not as described", you will lose the $80 your spent on shipping and also have to pay another $80 in shipping if you want the item back. Personally, I would never risk $80 to make $20.

Handling Fees

Live and learn. You have to put handling in when you create your listing, not in the listing itself. Have you tried all of the carriers? Fedex ground is much cheaper than USPS for heavy cross country items. Don't know about UPS but maybe shop around if you have time.

On very heavy items, I use UPS too.

Handling Fees

As noted in the other posts, you can add a handling fee when setting up the listing, but not after the item is Sold. Many sellers leave their shipping calculator at the default which is to show the retail price; then the "online discount" becomes a built-in handling fee which is roughly proportional to the postage cost.
