GreedBay to raise fees again, when will the insanity end?

I've been making this post every January/February for years. eBay raises fees again. Match that with unreasonable rate increases from the post office and looking back just a few years ago, between the rising costs of inventory, shipping, supplies, and fees, you have to sell twice as much to make the same amount of money while executives are rolling in the dough. Anything to appease stockholders who eBay prioritizes over their sellers. If only there was legitimate competition. When eBay first switched from PayPal to Managed Payments, fees were 11.7% & 30 cents. Now they are 12.7% & 40 cents. Just a few more years and fees will be over 20% and it will cost $12 to ship a 4 oz item through USPS. Enjoy the last of it before it is no longer profitable. Buyers won't pay more for your items before your fees are higher. And if eBay ever starts buyer fees like a certain other platform did, we are all doomed.

I have experimented on a small level with promoted listings but this last % increase has made my decision, I absolutely will not pay for "promoted" listings. Going right now to end the ones that I have running. If I can not sell it without paying extra I will just trash it.

ebay can and will do as they want but so can everyone else, remember that on % based fees the inflation increases are automatic.

If you are not getting value for the fees you pay, many are not, find a place where you do get value and sell there. If there is no alternative, consider another way to earn money.

Yes. I always research my prices across the web before I list and thankfully most of the time I am the unbeatable price on here. That’s why I am still surviving. But I am not growing at all.

There are many items for sale here you can't find any other place.

Hi @secondlifetreasures-llc

I remember when a gallon of gas cost less than 50 cents ... of course my parents were paying for it back then.

You wrote: "I've been making this post every January/February for years. eBay raises fees again. ..."

Prices going up should not be any surprise but your annual rant is certainly noted.  The fee increase represents about 2.8% increase (for my categories) ... well under the national inflation rate.  eBay's income comes from fees and advertising ... anyone not interested in selling under the eBay fee structure has the option to stop selling or raising their prices to offset the increase in fees.

Goodwill is ridiculous with their Fed Ex shipping, handling fees etc. They are raking in big cash and I wonder how much of it actually goes to these programs they support.

That's a pretty big exaggeration of a 4oz package going to $12 through the USPS. It's not even 50% of that currently. As I always say, you have free will and can mail through other delivery services, but be prepared to pay $15-$20+. No one is holding a gun to your head to mail solely through the USPS.

That's why I shop here mostly. The items I buy are often hard to find on other venues. I've noticed that if I can find them elsewhere the prices are WOW........no thanks, don't want it that bad.............

Of course eBay puts shareholders first. Their only goal is to maximize their value to their shareholders. Failure to do so and they won't last long. There are alternatives out there and eBay now only accounts for about 20% of my sales by volume. Buyers are also seeking alternatives which include a LOT of local forums and venues. A lot have returned to B&M stores as well.

The increases in shipping cost have probably had a greater impact on my sales on all venues where I ship items than any increases in fees. I don't see selling costs getting any cheaper no matter which ones you are looking at or talking about.

I buy quite a bit of household items from eBay as the prices are considerably lower. Appliance parts, electrical and the like to mention a few.

EBay beats Amazon by a country mile on most everything.

SAD that they are not doing enough to attract more buyers on here and with the competition being so darn fierce for them it’s inevitable that they have to raise the fees to compensate for less and less sales. That’s my take on this. A company in competition with so many other websites needs to help the sellers keep their prices down to compete. Not here.

If that was true they would have increased fees in all categories. They didn't increase fees in trading cards because that category has a TON of competition all over social media and other sites. They can't afford to increase in that category or people will go elsewhere.

Many buyers look at the prices on Temu, and are so clueless as to what garbage they are selling. Clothing  full of toxic chemicals….they only look at the prices.  If they read what was in them. A biohazard.

@rossgames great point! Several of the "focus verticals" are not seeing a fee increase - as you point out trading cards, as well as handbags, watches and jewelry are all not increasing and even with sneakers, they are only increasing for ones below $150.

Wasn't the whole point that eBay focusing on those categories was supposed work out to some trickle down effect by bringing in more sales across all categories? 🤔

Seems to me like everyone else is just subsidizing trying to keep eBay "competitive" in those categories so CEO Jamie Iannone and his exec team that came up with the idea can save face and keep trying to convince Wall Street "our strategy is working!"

Re: GreedBay to raise fees again, when will the insanity end?

One day it will cost like thousand dollar to list an item here and then post office going to charge like thousand dollar to ship. It's going to cost 2000 dollar just in fees. then ebay is going to charge fees on that at 250%. Ebay been planning this all along. one day we are all going to get like twenty thousand dollar bill just for logging on.  selling on ebay will be really hard if you don't use free shipping.
